Snowmobile license: training and how to get category Al in 2021

Category

A snowmobile with a motorcycle seat and steering wheel is not intended for driving on public roads. A self-propelled vehicle is defined as an off-road motor vehicle of the first group, the speed of which does not exceed 50 km/h. For this type of transport, regardless of the power or volume of the working engine, a tractor driver's license of category A1 is provided.

If there is category A in the license issued before 2000, then it is allowed to obtain a certificate from Gostekhnadzor without training and passing additional exams. The new rights do not provide for this possibility.

Documents required for enrollment in a snowmobile training group

Training and exam

Training takes place in educational institutions that have a license for the appropriate program containing traffic rules, rules for operating and driving self-propelled equipment, and first aid.

Modern driving schools provide full-time and distance learning.

A candidate for admission must:

  • be at least 16 years old:
  • have no medical contraindications to driving a snowmobile;
  • not be included in the list of persons deprived of a driver’s license.

After completing the full course of training, a Certificate of Completion is issued.

Did you know? Civilians take exams for the right to drive snowmobiles at Gostekhnadzor or at a driving school, provided that an inspector from this institution is included in the commission. Military personnel are allowed to take the test and drive on the territory of the military unit at their place of deployment. In exceptional cases, the chief inspectors of Gostekhnadzor of a specific region of the Russian Federation examine refugees, sailors and foreigners.

The first step is testing for knowledge of traffic rules, design, maintenance and safe operation of an off-road vehicle. If the test is not passed the first time, a re-examination is scheduled a week later. The same interval is maintained when retaking driving.

The results obtained from testing theoretical knowledge are valid for 3 months. Next comes re-training.

The practical exam is divided into two parts:

  • Motordrome. The ability to climb an overpass, enter a garage in reverse, braking and stopping at different speeds, and turning in a confined space is tested.
  • "City". A candidate for a tractor driver license must demonstrate knowledge of traffic rules and the ability to maneuver safely in real traffic conditions.

A total of three attempts are allowed. Starting from the fourth time, driving is accepted only if there is a certificate from the driving school about completing additional training.

After successful testing of theoretical knowledge and driving, a tractor driver's license with open category A1 is issued for a period of 10 years.

In practice, the snowmobile driving test is easier to pass than the regular driver's license.

Education

Training for driving a snowmobile takes place in regular driving schools. The only thing worth clarifying is that not all driving courses offer this service. Here, to organize the process, a specialized race track and, accordingly, a snowmobile are required.

Often training is carried out in small groups of 3-5 people or even according to an individual program.

Since 2015, driving license training outside of driving schools has been prohibited, so you won’t be able to pass the exam externally

During the training, cadets will be told about traffic rules, features of the design and maintenance of snowmobiles and ATVs, as well as the principles of first aid. We can say that all this knowledge is extremely necessary: when traveling outside populated areas in off-road conditions, future drivers must be, as they say, 100% ready for all life situations. After all, vehicle breakdown and even minor injury can become a problem in a snowy forest far from possible help.

Many driving schools today offer distance learning in the “theoretical part”. This online service will be convenient for those who already have a driver’s license of any other category.

The practical part of the training includes training in driving a snowmobile. This concerns the correct seating and position of the driver while driving and when stopping, features of maneuvering and choice of trajectory, including in limited conditions. Standard exercises are also practiced: “acceleration-braking”, “reversing into the garage” and “snake”.

Tickets for passing your snowmobile license in 2021

To prepare for and pass the exam for your category AI license, you need to master the tickets. They contain special questions on knowledge of traffic rules, general design and operation of a snowmobile, as well as first aid. These are different tickets than are used when passing the test for a driver's license for a car or motorcycle.

Now the exam uses tickets that were approved by the Ministry of Agriculture on October 18, 2021 . 45 tickets in total , each with 8 questions (360 questions in total) . For comparison, when obtaining a driver’s license for a car or motorcycle, 40 tickets of 20 questions each are used (800 in total).

The questions in the tickets concern not only snowmobiles, but also ATVs.

Most of the questions in the tickets do not have pictures; where they are, they are more of an accompanying rather than informational nature.

Here are some sample questions from the test:

It is quite difficult to get tickets in printed form, and this is not necessary: you can practice taking the test online.

Driving school training periods

The duration of training is 1-1.5 months to study theory and practice. During this time, it is necessary to attend 54 academic hours of practical and 76 academic hours of lectures.

Many driving schools also offer a shortened version of the course, when only theory is studied, for those drivers who already have experience riding a snowmobile and feel confident behind the wheel.

I recommend, even if you have extensive driving experience, to take at least 1 practical lesson to see and pass the tasks that will be given during the exam at Gostekhnadzor. It’s better to make sure in advance that you can easily cope with them than to run into an unpleasant surprise.

Documents for training

To enroll in snowmobile driving courses at a driving school, you need the following documents:

  • passport
  • document on temporary registration in the region (if permanent registration is in another region)
  • medical certificate
  • photo 3x4 (2 pcs.)
  • driving license of any category (if available)
  • tractor driver's license (if you have one)

Foreign citizens who are not residents of the Russian Federation can also apply for training. To do this, you will need a national passport with a notarized translation into Russian in addition to the list of basic documents.

Cost of education

The cost of training for a snowmobile license depends on the timing and what is expected to be mastered in the program.

The standard price at a driving school is from 5,000 to 10,000 rubles (price as of January 2021).

At the same time, if the cadet already has any traffic police license, then the cost may be 1000-2000 rubles less. In this case, he will no longer study general traffic rules, but only those that relate to all-terrain vehicles.

Price

Costs for purchasing a certificate include:

1. Payment for the services of medical workers upon receipt of a certificate.

Obtaining a conclusion on the absence of contraindications for driving off-road vehicles will cost 1,500–3,000 thousand rubles. The certificate will be cheaper if you go to the district clinic at your place of residence, rather than to a private institution. The services of narcologists and neurologists in specialized dispensaries are paid only.

2. Cost of training.

The range of prices in driving schools depends on the number of classes and the city. On average they pay 6-10 thousand rubles. no extra hours. In 2021, some educational institutions have significantly increased the cost of theoretical and practical classes. For example, in Yekaterinburg the price tag rose from five to ten thousand rubles.

3. State duty.

A tractor driver's license, including a temporary one in paper form, costs 500 rubles, on a plastic basis - 2 thousand rubles.

They pay the same amount for a restored document minus the costs of educational courses.

Ask a Question

Within 10 days after purchasing a snowmobile, visit the Gostekhnadzor office. The inspector is presented with an identity card, technical passport, document confirming ownership. If you are not the first owner of the vehicle, then you need a certificate with a mark on deregistration of the vehicle, which can be issued by both the seller and the buyer.

They fill out an application, pay a fee for the state number of 1.5 thousand rubles, for a certificate - 500 rubles, for a mark in the registration certificate - 350 rubles. The same amount is paid upon deregistration.

A snowmobile manufactured less than a year ago does not require technical inspection. If it is older, then the condition assessment procedure is carried out by a Gostekhnadzor inspector at the place indicated by him, where the applicant is obliged to deliver the car.

The collected and submitted package of documents is checked for compliance and absence of restrictions. If there are no comments, the owner of the vehicle is given a registration certificate, license plate number, technical certificate, and registration certificate with a mark.

Important! The owner of a snowmobile is obliged to pay a transport tax annually and provide transport for technical inspection.

Category A: training for ATV, snowmobile, all-terrain vehicle

One of the most popular categories of training for self-propelled vehicles. According to the legislation of the Russian Federation, category “A” includes vehicles that are either not at all capable of moving on public roads or, due to design features, are not capable of reaching a speed of more than 50 km/h.

The demand for training courses for category “A” is determined by the types of vehicles used. You can only obtain a license to drive an ATV or snowmobile by successfully passing an exam for this category.

Fine for lack of driver's license

Some drivers believe that driving a snowmobile off public roads is possible without permits. This is wrong. In order not to create emergency situations outside the city limits, you need to know the operating and driving rules. To do this, they undergo training, the results of which are confirmed by exams and the issuance of a tractor driver’s license with an open category A1.

When leaving the roadway, a traffic police officer has the right to demand this document.

Ask a Question

Punishment for driving without a license is regulated by the Code of Administrative Violations. Part 1 of Article 12.7 provides for a fine of 5–15 thousand rubles. Providing a regular driver's license will not change the amount of the penalty.

Responsibility for lack of a snowmobile driving license

If a snowmobile driver is stopped by a traffic police officer or Gostekhnadzor, and he does not have a tractor driver’s license with the open category “A1”, then liability arises in accordance with Article 12.7 of the Administrative Code. If you do not have a certificate, or have completed training, or the required category, the fine will be from 5 to 15 thousand rubles. If the snowmobile is driven by a person who is currently deprived of the right to drive a vehicle, then a fine of 3 thousand rubles, or administrative arrest for 15 days, or compulsory work from 100 to 200 hours is possible. If the owner of a snowmobile transfers control of it to another person who obviously does not have a tractor driver’s license, then he will receive a fine of 30 thousand rubles.

Features of using transport

Before storing a snowmobile for long-term storage, the tracks must be loosened, and when it is re-opened, they must be tightened. You can perform the procedure yourself, but it is better to have specialists at a car service center.

The tracks of a self-propelled vehicle move on “rails” that require constant cooling. If there is not enough snow, they quickly wear out or even begin to melt. Insufficient snow cover is not only dangerous for the plastic “rails”, but also leads to overheating of the motor.

To operate a snowmobile without accidents, a beginner should not:

  • lower your feet from the footrests;
  • drive on snowless roads;
  • attach cheesecakes and sleds to the vehicle;
  • overtake a similar self-propelled vehicle;
  • sit a passenger on a lap;
  • move while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Performing complex stunts also leads to safety violations. Riding a snowmobile in itself brings unforgettable pleasure. And to operate it professionally, you need years of training.

Do not neglect special equipment, including a helmet, snowmobile waterproof boots, and a protective suit consisting of overalls or a jacket with pants. To create comfortable conditions, thermal underwear and a pair of waterproof gloves will be useful. In bright sunshine, blinding occurs and the eyes quickly get tired, which increases the risk of bumping into an obstacle. To prevent a possible accident, sunglasses must be included in your equipment.

For unforeseen cases, especially when moving long distances in unfamiliar areas, take with you:

  • first aid kit;
  • GPS or compass;
  • intercom (walkie-talkie, telephone);
  • shovel;
  • rocket launcher;
  • a minimum set of tools and spare parts that are the first to become unusable.

It is not recommended to travel alone. An unfavorable situation may arise in which the assistance of another person may be required.

If in the morning after spending the night the snowmobile starts but does not move, this means that the tracks are covered with an ice crust that interferes with movement.

Important! The greatest danger is driving on ice, especially at the beginning of winter. Overcoming such a section requires extreme caution. The grip of the tracks on the ice surface is weak, and there is a high risk of unexpected skids.

Moving through deep snow leads to bogging down of equipment. You cannot skid for a long time; such actions will lead to further immersion. You should turn off the engine and move the snowmobile to an area with strong crust.

Unprepared routes are dangerous, where there is a high risk of hitting stumps and snags. The speed should be minimal.

When transporting a self-propelled vehicle, it is recommended to use covers that protect the tracks from road dirt. Before the trip, passengers are instructed on safety precautions.

What is required to obtain a snowmobile license?

What is needed to pass your license at the State Technical Supervision Authority

A license for a snowmobile, which gives the opportunity to drive off-road motorized vehicles of category A1, can be obtained after completing full training. It takes place in special educational institutions that have a license and the right to train people in the appropriate program, as well as certify them on the subject of knowledge, and issue certificates of the established form. Individuals are allowed to independently prepare for passing the theoretical part of the exam and driving an off-road vehicle. To pass the necessary knowledge and driving, you must go to the Gostekhnadzor office and submit documents such as an application for passing the exam, a passport, if you have it, a tractor driver’s license, a driver’s license, a medical certificate, two photographs for documents, as well as a receipt for payment of the state fee. Then you need to pass the appropriate exams to obtain a driver's license of the required category.

Summing up

When deciding to purchase a snowmobile, you need to take into account that a separate category of rights is not provided for this type of transport. Only category A1 is valid in the tractor driver’s license. To obtain this document you must first complete a training course and pass exams. In addition, to legally drive a car you need a registration certificate, state number, and technical certificate.

The snowmobile will serve for a long time if you take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations and follow safety measures.

What documents are needed for training?

A person who wishes to take exams for the right to drive self-propelled vehicles of the corresponding category submits the following documents to the training center:

  • copy of passport (page spread with full name and registration);
  • 3x4 photographs - 2 pieces;
  • copy of driver's license;
  • a copy of the tractor driver's license (if available);
  • medical certificate of the established form with a special o.

A tractor operator's (tractor operator) certificate, which gives the right to drive, is issued by Gostekhnadzor after successfully passing the tractor driver qualification exam.
