Driving license category A
So, category A is permission to drive any motorcycle, including those equipped with a side trailer (sidecar).
According to the Road Traffic Rules, category A also allows driving three- and four-wheeled vehicles with a curb weight of no more than 400 kg. Subcategory A1 is conditionally “junior”, allowing riding motorcycles with an engine capacity of no more than 125 cc. cm and a power not exceeding 11 kW. By the way, subcategory A1 is allowed to be opened at the age of 16 and, of course, those who have category “A” on their driver’s license can drive equipment of subcategory A1.
Category A
The first of them is the simplest and most concise in terms of explanation by the legislation of 2021.
With category “A” you can drive motorcycles with any engine size and almost any number of wheels. But it’s not that simple; there are limitations. You need this stamp on your license to drive:
- a motorcycle with 2 wheels without restrictions on technical characteristics,
- any moped or scooter,
- tricycle or quadricycle (motorcycles with 3 or 4 wheels, respectively), but only if they have a motorcycle handlebar or seat (saddle between the legs).
Subcategory A1
It gives the right to drive the same motorcycles and mopeds, but already has its own limitations:
- The working volume of the motorcycle engine must not exceed 125 cm3,
- the power must be no more than 11 kW (in kilowatts it is indicated in the registration certificate).
If at least one of these parameters does not apply to your motorcycle, then what category of license do you need? That's right - "A"!

Driving license category B
The most common category is B. According to the definition of traffic rules, these are “cars (except for vehicles of category “A”), the permissible maximum weight of which does not exceed 3,500 kilograms and the number of seats, in addition to the driver’s seat, does not exceed eight; Category B vehicles coupled to a trailer whose maximum permitted weight does not exceed 750 kilograms; category B vehicles coupled to a trailer whose permissible maximum mass exceeds 750 kilograms, but does not exceed the unladen mass of the vehicle, provided that the total permissible maximum mass of such a combination of vehicles does not exceed 3,500 kilograms.” That is, this includes cars, light trucks and minibuses, as well as sidecars and cars with a trailer, the maximum permitted weight of which is not more than 750 kg. The main thing is that the permitted maximum weight of the trailer does not exceed the weight of the vehicle without load, and their total weight does not exceed 3.5 tons.
Penalties for driving with a trailer
In case of non-compliance with traffic rules regarding the absence of documents or a trailer recorded in such documents, as well as the designation of category E in the driving license, traffic police officers issue the following penalties:
- violations during installation of the trailer, as well as incorrect transportation of it – 500 rubles (Article No. 12.21 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation);
- the presence of defects that interferes with traffic – 500 rubles (Article No. 12.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation);
- absence of compulsory motor liability insurance for a trailer – 500 rubles (according to the Federal Law on Compulsory Insurance);
- the designation is not written on the driving license - 5,000 rubles (Article No. 27.12 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation);
- absence of state license plates on the trailer – 2,500 rubles.
IMPORTANT! If there are complex faults, the right to travel may be revoked until the device or vehicle is completely restored. For example, if the brake system contains defects, the car will be forced to be transported using a tow truck to an impound lot or to a workshop.
If a dangerous situation is created on the roads, an appropriate fine is imposed.
In what cases can you be fined for missing a category:
- When driving a motorcycle. If the driver does not have a license with a category that corresponds to a vehicle engine volume of 125 cubic centimeters. For example, if you have a license for a moped (the engine capacity of which is only 50 cubic centimeters). When riding a motorcycle with a B license, no fine is imposed.
- Drivers of passenger vehicles with trailers. If you have B, you are allowed to drive a car with a trailer only if its maximum weight is 750 kilograms and the total weight of the vehicle, which should not exceed 3.5 thousand kilograms. If these conditions are not met, the availability of BE rights is asked.
- Driving a minibus with up to 8 seats, having a B license and not having the required category. Such an offense is equivalent to driving without a driver's license.
- On a bus without the presence of a registered category D in the documents, as well as when driving a passenger car with a C and D assigned to the driver, but without an entry in the B-category license.
- On freight transport without category E, the amount of the fine can be issued depending on its weight: more than 7.5 thousand kilograms and 3.5-7.5 thousand kilograms with a trailer. For the first case, the license must indicate the designation CE, and for the second - C1E.
ATTENTION! If you continue to drive in a situation where your license has been revoked, you may face serious punishment in the form of fines of up to 30,000 rubles and other measures at the discretion of the traffic police officer. Restoring a driver's license in this situation is possible only by re-training at a driving school and passing the exam at the State Traffic Inspectorate.

Fines for driving without the required vehicle category
According to traffic regulations, driving without a permit to drive a certain type of vehicle is a serious violation. This year, the fine for driving without a category can amount to a substantial amount. Below are the penalties that apply in various situations.
Vehicle categories
There are the following categories of vehicles:
- A – motorcycles;
- B – cars that can withstand a weight of up to 3.5 thousand kilograms and have about 8 seats;
- C – car with weight parameters of more than 3.5 thousand kilograms;
- D – means for transporting passengers with a number of seats from 8, excluding the driver’s seat;
- E – type of transport to which the trailer is attached.
Grounds for the fine and its amount
If the driver's license does not indicate the category of the vehicle he was driving, if a traffic police officer discovers inconsistencies in the document, this is recognized as a violation. In the legislation of the Russian Federation, such an offense is equated to fines and more serious penalties that are applied for driving without a license.
If we take into account the actions of the Code of the Russian Federation regarding administrative violations of December 30, 2001, driving a vehicle for which the driver does not have permission for A, B, C, D and E is punishable by fines in the amount of 5-15 thousand rubles. The only exception is driving during training. The latter situation does not provide for punishment for driving with a trailer and receiving categories D and E.

Category b up to how many tons
To perform these actions, you should familiarize yourself with the current regulations. To obtain a driver's license as a citizen of Ukraine or a person with similar rights, the following steps must be completed. Additionally, it is necessary to take into account the minimum age for obtaining a particular category of rights in Ukraine.
But it is too early to talk about significant changes. The main problem of road user regulation is the availability of low-powered two-wheelers. These include the so-called scooters, mopeds, etc.

Up to how many places category B
An even bigger request to knowledgeable people, according to the new decoding of categories C, C1, CE, C1E, none of them now gives the right to drive a road train with a trailer or semi-trailer weighing more than 3.5 tons, not counting the weight of the tractor. What category is now needed to drive a road train with an empty semi-trailer weighing 14 tons. Not counting the weight of the tractor? Thanks in advance.
