What does waffle marking at intersections mean and why is it needed?

This marking is done with yellow diagonal lines, which are framed by yellow borders. It is used at intersections controlled by traffic lights, where congestion is most likely to occur. Waffle markings indicate a section of the roadway that is prohibited from entering in the event of a traffic jam. In the traffic rules it is called “Marking 1.26”. It can be applied not only to standard intersections, but also to those that have more complex intersections.

It was first applied in 2015 in Moscow on Velozavodskaya Street. At that time, this was not yet enshrined at the legislative level, but was done only for the sake of experiment. After its results showed the effectiveness of such traffic organization, the markings were put into effect by an official document and began to be applied to other problematic intersections not only in the capital, but also in other cities of Russia. One of the first was Krasnodar, where blocking an intersection had dire consequences. The experiment also turned out to be successful, the number of congestions decreased slightly.

The marking can be used independently or in conjunction with road sign 1.35.

This means that a new marking 1.26 appears in the traffic rules, which is a grid of diagonal yellow lines.

This marking is needed for clarity; with such markings, the driver can clearly see the boundaries of the intersection and will understand whether it is possible to enter the intersection or not.

People have already nicknamed this marking as “waffle” marking, because this marking has been tested for a long time in several large cities of Russia.

Sign 1.35 is installed at the border of the intersection. If at complex intersections it is impossible to install a road sign at the border of the intersection, it is installed at a distance of no more than 30 meters from the border of the intersection.

- entails the imposition of an administrative fine in the amount of one thousand rubles.

How to correctly drive through the “waffle iron” markings at an intersection to avoid getting fined

You cannot stop on the markings for more than five seconds. Therefore, in order to avoid violating traffic rules, the driver must first let cars that are already moving through the intersection pass, and only after that can they enter the “yellow grid”.

You need to realistically assess the situation. If the intersection cannot be completed before the red light appears, it is better to wait and remain behind the stop line.

However, in some cases you can stop at waffle markings:

• to let cars moving straight ahead;
• to give way to pedestrians or cyclists;
• when stopping to avoid an emergency

There will be no fine if you stop at an intersection where there is a left turn. If a driver stops at a waffle iron to allow oncoming traffic or pedestrians to pass, this will not be considered a violation.

New road sign “Intersection Section” in the 2021 Traffic Regulations

In addition to the markings, the “Intersection Section” sign (the “waffle marking” sign) has also been introduced. It is not prohibitive or prescriptive, but only indicates the beginning of the marked road area. The sign has a square shape, with two diagonal yellow stripes on a gray background, intersecting in the center, and framed by a yellow border. If installing a sign on the border of the “waffle iron” is impossible for any reason, then it should be located no further than 30 meters from its beginning. Moreover, if the use of markings without a sign is permitted, then the sign itself can only be installed if there are yellow diagonal stripes on the road.

Sometimes under the sign you can see a sign “Photo and video recording”. It indicates that traffic at this intersection is detected automatically.

The new road sign 1.35 will be rectangular in shape and the color of the sign will be light gray. The top of the sign will feature an intersection with the new 1.26 markings in the center. This marking is a square with yellow lines; inside the square there will be diagonal lines forming a kind of grid.

Under the image of the intersection there will be a warning message: “Do not enter the markings if the exit is busy.” This inscription will be quite large and will take up almost all the space at the bottom of the sign.

This sign will be made in accordance with all standards and covered with reflective film. The road sign will be installed in front of the intersection and positioned so that it is clearly visible to road users both in the daytime and in the dark.

Fines for “waffle” markings

On March 1, 2021, fines began to be received from automatic recording cameras for stopping on a road marked with waffle markings. According to Article 12.13 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, the fine is 1000 rubles. To record violations, automatic violation recording cameras are used. The first records the location of the offender’s car, the second gives a general picture of the intersection (video recording) where the vehicle stopped. The camera also records the position of another car - the one that was interfered with. It doesn’t matter whether your car is completely in this zone or has just been hit.

The fine notice contains six photographs:

• four photos with the trajectory of the car that violated the traffic rules;
• photograph of a traffic light at the time of violation;
• photo with a car that was obstructed.

To prevent the violator from challenging the fine issued to him, the fact of stopping at the markings is also recorded on video.

Such a fine has been mentioned in the Code of Administrative Offenses since 2010. However, he was discharged extremely rarely. But since March 1, 2021, the first notifications of violations are already arriving regularly. All legal and technical nuances regarding the recording of this violation have already been resolved by now.

Change No. 2: “Waffle iron” - new markup

Here, in general, in addition to the introduction of a new road sign 1.35 and a new marking 1.26, which was called the “waffle iron”, changes to the traffic rules regarding new signs and markings have undergone only cosmetic ones.

View the official text of resolution No. 1276. But the main thing is that these changes will come into force only in six months, except for some changes to road signs and markings (regarding photographic recording).

What do the new 1.35 sign and 1.26 markings look like?

An image of the marking has already been received, but the sign only contains a description of its future image, so it is not yet possible to provide a photo. However, we drew it according to the vague description in the explanatory note of the innovation in the traffic rules, although in fact the photo of the sign may subsequently be different.

From the explanatory note the following description of the sign follows:

The sign is a white triangle in the format of road sign 1.6 “Intersection of equivalent roads”. In the center of the sign field there is a black schematic image of an intersection, similar in size to that shown on sign 1.6, with an image in the center of a square with red diagonals.

The new road sign belongs to the warning section. According to the Rules, they are installed 50-100 meters before the intersection in populated areas and 150-300 meters outside populated areas. But it was for sign 1.35 that they made an exception - it is placed at the border of the intersection, or if this is impossible, no more than 30 meters before the intersection.

Marking 1.26 can only be yellow.
