Category B1 on your driving license allows you to drive exotic vehicles such as tricycles and quadricycles. Drivers who already have category A or B can automatically add B1 to their license. Persons who do not have a license will have to attend a driving school and pass exams at the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate before driving such vehicles.
What is the B1 rights category for?
Having received a category “A” license, which is permission to drive motorcycles, the driver does not have the right to drive a motorcycle with three or more wheels, which are now equivalent to a passenger car.
The new B1 license category, in contrast to A, gives the right to drive quadricycles and tricycles. The driver of such a vehicle without the appropriate category of license will receive a fine in the amount of 5 to 15 thousand rubles, according to the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, which is equivalent to driving a vehicle without a license.
On the new “crusts” there is a special column about the assignment of category B1. If you have an old-style license, you will have to contact the traffic police to replace it. This category can be assigned either with passing the appropriate exam, if there is a lower category, for example, A1, or without it, if category “A” is already open.

How to get category B1?
Passing any additional exams is not required to obtain category B1. It is automatically placed on the license of those drivers who have successfully passed all examination tests. When obtaining a B-category license, the B1 subcategory and an additional AS mark are included in the certificate (as you remember, it gives the right to drive a quadricycle). Upon receipt of the A-category, the B1 subcategory is entered automatically and also the MS label.
Sometimes a person is simply trying to restore his lost rights, then the B1 subcategory is added to his new rights without the requirement to pass an exam.
The fact that this subcategory is assigned to the driver is displayed on the back of the driver's license.
Obtaining a driver's license for the first time: category B1
If a citizen has never had driving documents at all, then in order to get subcategory B1, you need to decide which category, A or B, suits him in order to drive his own vehicle, take a training course at a driving school and all stages of examination tests.
To become the owner of these rights as quickly as possible, follow the step-by-step instructions provided:
- obtain a medical certificate from any medical institution, which will confirm the absence of contraindications for driving a vehicle (we will talk about this later);
- contact a licensed driving school where you can receive quality education on driving a vehicle;
- pass all stages of driving theory exam tests with a minimum number of errors, go to the next stage to pass practical driving on the racetrack. Be careful when taking the practical driving test within the city so that the examiner cannot make claims against you;
- pay the state fee to obtain a driving license;
- collect the required documents to receive the “crust”.
How to pass the exam for category B1?
There is an opinion among drivers that the exam for the B1 category is considered the simplest and they explain it this way: quadricycles (quads), tricycles are not so difficult to drive, and many do not face the problem of passing the exercises at the test site and pass this exam the first time . But in order to become a license holder, you still need to know the theory well and pass a medical examination in advance.
The preliminary exam always takes place at the driving school. It will make it clear how ready you are to pass the main exam taken by the traffic police.
Preparation and passing of the exam are carried out using tickets corresponding to category B.
If the exam is failed, a retake will be scheduled in a few weeks. Information about the retake time is sent to the driving school where the student studied. But before taking the retake, he will have to take the test again using electronic tickets and show his driving skills at a driving school.
If the student does not encounter any problems when passing the exam at a driving school, then he will be admitted to the exam at the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, where he will have to pass tests on practical driving of a two-wheeled vehicle on a race track. They include 5 exercises:
- ex. No. 4: be able to stop and start moving on an incline;
- ex. No. 5: the ability to demonstrate maneuvering at speed in a confined space;
- ex. No. 6: ability to maneuver in reverse and drive into the pit in reverse;
- ex. No. 7: ability to park and leave a parking space;
- ex. No. 8: driving through a controlled intersection.
They say that passing the exam for obtaining a license of category “B1” is not so difficult, but you should not relax. From the driver's point of view, driving any vehicle, even the simplest one, requires careful driving, attentiveness on the roads, and knowledge of traffic rules.
Why was the B1 category introduced?
The development of technology has led to the fact that previously one-piece copies of unusual vehicles, such as tricycles and quadricycles, have become available to a large number of drivers.
Having a large engine and a weight greater than that of a motorcycle, they become full-fledged road users, on a par with passenger cars.
The B1 category of driver's license is designed to improve road safety, equating such vehicles to passenger cars, because the skills of driving a scooter or moped will clearly not be enough to fully control a wider vehicle that occupies an entire lane.
Thus, the primary reason for the introduction of a new subcategory is concern for road safety and bringing the categories into line with European standards, where full-size motorcycle-powered vehicles are quite common and have equal rights.
Why do driving school students often fail the traffic police exam?
At what age can you get “B1”?
As soon as a citizen turns 18 years old, he can begin to apply for a driving license of subcategory B1. All tricycles and quadricycles are combined into a separate group, and a driver’s document for driving these vehicles is issued in accordance with the B-category. Therefore, the requirements for them are exactly the same as for vehicles of category B.
Please note: to operate a motorcycle in category A1, you must be 16 years of age. But to drive category A motorcycles, you need to be 18 years old.
It is possible to undergo training at a driving school and pass exams before the age of 18, but in this case the young person will only receive a certificate of passing the internal exam at the driving school. But in order to pass the traffic police exam, you will have to wait a little until you reach full adulthood. This is the age when young people are legally allowed to demonstrate their driving skills.
Driving in category B1
A B1 license allows you to drive quadricycles and tricycles. These vehicles are still exotic for Russians. It will probably be useful for many to know the official formulation of these concepts.
- A tricycle is a vehicle with an engine of up to 50 cc and three wheels. In any case, such vehicles must be registered with the traffic police.
- A quadricycle is a four-wheeled version of a motor vehicle, limited only by its curb weight, which should not exceed 550 kg.
Both one and the second equipment require registration with the traffic police and obtaining a driving license in the form of category B1. In both cases, if the rated speed of a motor vehicle is less than 25 km/h, it falls into another “weight category”, mopeds, and does not require such qualifications - category M is sufficient.
Note that electric motors are increasingly used in such vehicles, therefore, unlike internal combustion engines, power does not depend on the engine capacity, but on the traction force. A tricycle with an electric motor should not consume power more than 10 kW, and a quadricycle - more than 15 kW, otherwise the equipment becomes an “electric vehicle”.
An ATV should not be confused with a quadricycle, because the first does not have the right to travel on public roads, and is subject to registration with Technical Supervision, not being, in fact, a vehicle. In addition, an ATV does not have a cabin, while a quadricycle, as a rule, is equipped with a full-fledged cabin.

What does B1 rights category marked AS and MS mean?
In the third column of the driver's license category plate, additional marks are indicated that clarify what type of tricycle or quadricycle their holder has the right to drive.
- If the category B1 license is marked AS, this means that its owner has the right to drive a vehicle that is as similar as possible to a car, with a steering wheel and a full seat.
- If the category B1 license is marked MS, this means that its owner has the right to drive a vehicle that has a motorcycle seat and handlebars like a motorcycle.
- If both categories, A and B, are open, then there will be no such marks, since it is assumed that the owner of the license can drive any vehicle: a tricycle or a quadricycle.

Special marks on a driver's license for category B1
Drivers who have recently received a driving license of category B1 are interested in what additional marks appear in the document under paragraph 12 in the form of the alphabetic symbols “AS”, “MS” or “ML”. This attentiveness is only welcome, because... Every holder of a B-category driver's document is required to know their meaning and explanation.
If there is an “AS” symbol next to the “B1” label, then it is placed only when the driver is assigned an A-category or a B-category. If the driver has both of these categories open at once, then the symbol is not placed.
"AS" is an acronym that stands for Automotive Steering. This mark is placed when the owner of the vehicle has the right to drive a vehicle with a car-type seat and steering wheel.
Some motorists have a new type of driving license next to the B1 category with the symbol “MS”, which stands for Motorcycle Steering. The holder of this mark has permission to drive vehicles with a motorcycle-type steering wheel and seating position, which include quadricycles, tricycles, and motorcycles.
If you see the abbreviation “ML” opposite category B1, then it means only one thing: the owner of these rights has some kind of medical limitation.
Differences between category B1 and B and BE
A license of category B1 does not provide the right to drive a passenger car, as category B, and especially a passenger car with a trailer, as provided by category BE. Although, very often, those with category B1 receive it along with B.
But if this is not indicated on the license, driving a passenger car is strictly prohibited. And further. It is prohibited to use a trailer with a carrying capacity of more than 750 kilograms without having subcategory BE, even if the main category B is open.
What cars can you drive with category B1?
When receiving this category from the traffic police, it is worth mentioning that you are also going to open the M category for driving motor vehicles. Otherwise, your document will be marked “ML” - that is, driving mopeds is prohibited.
As mentioned above, with category B1 you can ride a quadricycle or tricycle. The restriction for tricycles is that the engine capacity is no more than 500 cc, the speed can exceed 50 km/h. For quadricycles, speed is limited to 50 km/h, and weight is limited to 550 kg.
Also, having received category B, the driver can drive a passenger car, and with a category B1 license, also with an automatic transmission, plus B1 gives the right to drive a two-wheeled motorcycle.
