How many owners can be included in the PTS

Where to see the number of places in a document

Every driver needs to learn how to read a car passport and quickly find there the necessary information about the car or its owner. Here it is worth referring to Appendix No. 1 (Ministry of Internal Affairs Order No. 496), which is a sample of a standard PTS.

The form has a typical A4 size, where watermarks are provided to protect against any counterfeit: it is these characteristics that allow the paper to be considered an original copy. The top number on the front is unique, allowing inspectors to verify the authenticity of the passport using a code only.

It is on the front side of the PTS, in addition to the official name and basic details (number), that the most complete information about the transport itself . But in the second part, written facts about the owner are indicated; this information is entered when re-registering the car with the traffic police and contains comprehensive information about the owner:

  • full name or the name of the company, as the owners of the transport;
  • residential address (for individuals) or registration address (for legal entities);
  • the exact date of receipt of a specific car;
  • details of the document that confirms the transfer of ownership (donation or sale agreement, leasing agreement, certificate of inheritance, etc.);
  • signatures of the former and current owners.

When you have the original PTS in your hands, it reflects the data of absolutely all owners of the vehicle, starting from the very first one. But if there is a duplicate, then it will not be possible to find out about the real number of people. Then you will have to check the number of owners online. To do this, you must also have a passport for the car and a VIN code. Just go to the portal, enter your individual number and instantly see the result. The verification procedure is the same on almost any portal, although some sites provide this service for a fee (usually the cost is low).

How many seats are there in the PTS?

The answer to the question of how many places in a car’s title to register new owners, experts voice the number six. Two columns for recording owners are provided on the front part. Additional places in the car passport are available on the back of the document. This fact does not limit the number of potential owners, because there are no articles in the legislation prohibiting the transfer of a vehicle to more than six persons.

If a person has lost his main passport, he is issued a duplicate. The document is similar to the original passport with the difference that a corresponding note is made on it. The question arises, how many places for recording are provided in the duplicate PTS. The original and the copy are no different in content, so in both cases the number of positions for recording the new owner is identical - six.

If, when purchasing a car, the seller shows a duplicate, you need to find out the reason for receipt and “punch” the data through the traffic police. It happens that a person received a copy for a good reason, for example, he lost a document or it was stolen. Perhaps all the original fields were filled in, and it was not possible to enter new owners (we already know how many places in the PTS are provided in the official form).

But the presence of such a document from the owner should raise suspicions among the new buyer. There are several risks:

  1. The duplicate was obtained to hide information about previous owners. A large number of owners indicates the disadvantages of the vehicle and the desire to get rid of it quickly.
  2. The car was in an accident beyond repair. The vehicle is purchased by the insurer and sold to a reseller. The latter invests money in repairs and sells the car. The original PTS indicates the name of the insurance company, but the duplicate will not contain this inscription.
  3. The copy is designed for sale of the car to two owners. The principle of the fraudulent scheme is to create a duplicate passport for a certain car, followed by the theft of another vehicle and alteration of the license plates. As a result, two cars have identical data and are sold to different people.

The vehicle may be on loan. When issuing money to buy a car, the financial institution takes the original title, and the driver has a duplicate in his hands. Taking such a car from your hands is dangerous, because in case of delay, the creditor has the right to confiscate the collateral for debts. In this case, the change in the owner of the vehicle does not play any role for the bank.

Rules for filling out PTS when changing ownership

The legislation clearly defines how many places are indicated in the PTS, and in 2021 this number is six. The following information is indicated in the provided cells:

  • Full name of the owner of the vehicle;
  • registration of the new owner;
  • the day of the transaction for the purchase of a vehicle;
  • the basis document on the basis of which the right to the car is transferred (the name of the paper and the day of its issue are indicated);
  • autograph of the participants in the transaction (if the seller is a company, in the last paragraph, along with the signature, an imprint of the legal entity is made);
  • buyer's signature.

It is important for the seller to understand how many owners can be included in the title in order to prepare for the transaction in advance. If there is no space available, you may need to obtain a new document. In addition, at the time of selling the vehicle, the old owner is recommended to prepare a copy and save it along with the contract confirming the sale. This is necessary in case of force majeure and litigation (if any arise).

An equally important question, in addition to places in the PTS, is how much time is given for re-registration of the vehicle after registration of the contract. According to the law, the new owner will be given 10 days. The countdown starts from the day the policy is drawn up and executed. During this time, the happy buyer is required to come to the traffic police and submit an application to make corrections to the car registration data.

If the new owner ignores this requirement and continues to use the vehicle, fines will go to the previous owner if traffic rules are violated. In addition, the old owner will have to make tax payments for the car. When you receive a receipt from the Federal Tax Service or for fines, you need to come to the traffic police and ask to deregister the vehicle.

To avoid hassle, you need to figure out how many entries can be made in the title, immediately register the new owner, and re-register the car on the same day.

How to add a new owner

It is the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 496 that establishes the procedure for preparing the contents of the document (technical characteristics of the car and details about the owner), therefore the standard registration procedure takes place in accordance with the requirements of this official order. According to the regulations, immediately after affixing signatures to the purchase and sale agreement, the next step is to fill out special fields in the PTS form, which guarantees the fact of transfer of ownership rights to the buyer.

The listed fields can be filled in independently by the car buyer in a specialized company that compiled the transaction or in the traffic police department during re-registration. But the last column in this list is filled out exclusively by employees of the State Traffic Inspectorate.

In order to avoid serious troubles and conflict situations in the future, auto experts strongly recommend that sellers, after concluding an agreement, make a photocopy of the passport and store it together with the original agreement. If the car's title is not damaged, has a satisfactory appearance and free space for new entries, then no additional actions are required.

What is an individual owner's title?

A vehicle passport is an official document that contains the technical characteristics of a car or other unit of motor transport .
Additionally, the form contains information about the owners of the vehicle, plus information about registering the car with the traffic police and deregistration. The form itself is produced by Goznak on special blue paper and is equipped with several levels of protection, which include:

  • hologram visible in light;
  • water marks;
  • volumetric letters;
  • microtext, readable when enlarged.

Thanks to such special details, it is possible to distinguish original documents from falsified ones. This allows us to better protect potential buyers of motor vehicles from the actions of fraudsters. When the vehicle passport is handed over to the owner, the series and number are stamped on the form.

Attention! If you plan to purchase a vehicle secondhand, when checking the documentation, special attention must be paid to the presence of all the protective elements of the vehicle passport.

Otherwise, you can purchase a car that is pledged to the bank or has a criminal history. The PTS is the main document of the car, thanks to which various registration actions can be performed with the vehicle. Even though it is not used most of the time, its presence is required. This is due to the following situations in which paper is needed:

  1. Proof of ownership of the car.

  2. Conclusion of legal transactions and agreements. For example, execution of purchase and sale agreements, deeds of gift. Or disposal of the vehicle.
  3. Registration of the vehicle with the traffic police with the issuance of license plates.

At the moment, the vehicle passport is not included in the list of documents that must be available to the car owner when checking documents by a state traffic inspector.

How many seats is the registration certificate for?

Modern drivers should clearly understand that the PTS is an important document that contains all the reliable information about the car. If after purchasing a new vehicle you were not included in your passport, then you actually do not have the right to travel anywhere with it. The only exception to this rule concerns the situation when the driver drives a car under a power of attorney certified by a notary.

Many car enthusiasts are concerned with the question of exactly how many owners a vehicle can have. The final number is not limited in any way from a legal point of view. A car can change any number of owners over any period of time, because the law does not stipulate “limits” of possible owners. However, from a technical point of view, the paper has a limited format, so only a limited number of people can be registered in the PTS - 6 people.

What to do if you run out of recording space

Particular difficulties are created by the situation when there are no columns for a new entry. Since it is impossible to conceal the fact of transfer of rights to a car, you need to take care of changing the documents. You can get another copy (official duplicate) in just a few steps:

  1. Collect documentation, which includes an old copy of the PTS, citizen’s passport, MTPL policy, car purchase and sale agreement and STS.
  2. Personally visit the MREO with a ready-made package of papers, write an application and pay the agreed fee to the state (also hand in a check).
  3. Wait until the service employees check the information, approve it, and then issue new PTS and STS, because the serial numbers are similar.

There is no need to drive the vehicle, documents confirming ownership are sufficient, and they will require you to provide the car for inspection if there are any doubts about the authenticity of the data.

The algorithm for replacing a passport with a car involves paying a state duty in the amount of 800 rubles , as reflected in the Tax Code of the Russian Federation (Part 2, Article 333.33, paragraph 36). In addition to the PTS, the owner will also receive a replacement registration certificate. The state duty in this case will be 500 rubles, and you can save 30% on it if you make payment through the State Services portal.

How to find out the owner?

Taking into account the basic scheme according to which entries are made in the vehicle passport form, the current owner of a car or other unit of motor transport is the owner marked last in the list. Information about the current owner can be found in one of the fields present on the back of the vehicle passport or its duplicate. From there you can glean the following information:

  • Full name of the current owner of the car;
  • current registration address of the current owner;
  • date of transfer or sale of the vehicle from the old owner to the new one;
  • details of official documentation confirming ownership of motor vehicles;
  • signatures of the old and new owners;
  • information about the STS, when and by whom it was issued, series and number.

If there are vehicle identification numbers, those who want to find out complete information about the vehicle can use online services and this can be done, first of all, using the resources available on the official website gibdd.ru.

Information about the owners of motor vehicles specified in the PTS form must be current and promptly change in accordance with the alienation procedures. At the same time, it is preferable for the old owner to take care of registering a duplicate in advance if there is no space left for entering new information into the vehicle registration certificate.

How many owners can you enter?

Initially, the document in question for the car contains exactly 6 columns intended for car owners. Moreover, registration of the title begins immediately from the moment the vehicle is released. The first note is made by the plant where the car was manufactured. Then the dealer, who dealt with the issue of selling and selling the car, fills out the second line when concluding the purchase and sale agreement. Therefore, even the first buyer will receive a document that already contains basic records.

It turns out that as a result, only four columns remain for subsequent changes. But this fact does not mean at all that the car is allowed to have only 4 owners. According to regulations, the actual number of former and future owners is not limited in any way, and in each column the following data is indicated, as well as the signature of the owner. The main thing is to update the PTS in a timely manner and make a request for a copy.

The amount of valid space in a car passport is limited to 6 positions, but if necessary, you can always get a duplicate of the document and enter the required information about the new owner. It is much more important that the records themselves are as complete as possible, because this information allows you to track the history of the car and weigh all the risks during the purchase or sale.

On any website that offers advertisements for the sale of cars, there is a mandatory item to fill out in which you need to indicate the number of owners in the title. Buyers are very interested in such information, and car owners are required to indicate it. It is traditionally believed that the fewer owners the better, they say, a frequent change of owners is suspicious, and if the car is in the same hands all its life, then this is a more reliable option, you can at least ask the owner what happened and was done to the car. However, life is different. And here are two real stories from the practice of the author of the article.

Technical Product Passport (PTS)

The Audi 100 had three real owners over its 20-year life. The first in Holland. After driving the car for 7 years (not bad by their standards), he sold the car to a buyer from Russia (this was before the increase in duties, then it was economically profitable to import a used foreign car from Europe). He was not a reseller, he operated the car himself and drove it for seven years, after which he sold it to his friend, who drove it for another six years. As a result, a 20-year-old car has only three real owners, and in the Russian PTS only two names are indicated. Gorgeous, but the last owner didn’t care about the car at all, so the actual condition of the car was deplorable.

Second story. The two-year-old Renault Logan already has 4 owners on its title. Horror, horror, all potential buyers shied away from the car, but everything turned out to be explainable. The car was leased by a legal entity, so the leasing company was listed as the first owner. The debt was paid, the car was re-registered to the legal entity itself, but it soon went bankrupt and a private owner bought the car at auction. I bought it cheap, so I raised the price a little and sold it to the first reseller I came across. “Outbidders” do not like to include themselves in the PTS (including because it increases the number of owners, which is poorly perceived by buyers), but this time they had to. The trick is that the car was not particularly used in the legal entity; at the time of the story described, it had a real mileage of 12 thousand kilometers and was in the condition, as they say in the advertisements, of a “new car.” The fifth owner, who was not afraid to buy a car, still drives this car and is very pleased, although it would seem that the story looks very murky.

PTS

The situations illustrate a thought that seems obvious to everyone - the number of owners in the title, both small and large, does not guarantee anything and does not say anything about the real condition of the car, does not protect from legal or technical problems. The great enthusiasm for this parameter in advertisements is very easy to explain. When choosing a car on the secondary market, there are very few objective criteria from which to build. Mileage is not an indicator, it is easy to rewind. The actual technical condition cannot always be determined even with specialists. So you have to focus on data that is definitely objective and that can be verified, and the number of owners is precisely one of them. Another question is how to use this data.

Fortunately, no matter what is written in the column “Number of owners in the PTS”, this should not become both a red and green light in the matter of buying a used car. To reject an option just because it had many owners, or to agree only because there was only one owner, is very strange. But it is certainly worth taking such information into account, including using banal logic.

Check the car before purchasing and understand its real condition

If there is only one owner, then he should know the entire history of the car. You ask if the levers have been changed, but the interlocutor doesn’t know? Doubtful! More food for thought from more owners. It’s not even the quantity that’s interesting here, but the shift order and ownership time. If the first owner drove for a long time, and all the subsequent ones for 3-4 months, then this is very similar to the fact that there is some kind of hidden defect in the car (for example, high oil consumption), which, having discovered, no one is going to do a major overhaul of the engine, but wants to pass the car along in the relay race. In general, it is doubtful!

Therefore, we would not recommend focusing too much on the number of owners. This information should be taken into account, but not taken to heart; anyway, the real technical condition of the car is much more important than the number of entries in the title. By the way, they say that in electronic PTS, the transition to which the Russian government has been preparing for so long, but has never implemented, it will be impossible to look at the ownership history without a special request to the traffic police. So, you see, soon the “Number of owners in PTS” section on advertising sites will become obsolete.
