What does the APS mark on your license mean?
The APS (acoustic parking system only) mark on your driver's license requires the installation of parking sensors (proximity sensors to obstacles) in the car you will drive. At the same time, in the description of the APS mark there is no discussion of whether the car should be equipped with front parking sensors or only rear ones.
The APS mark makes it possible for people with poor vision due to certain diseases to drive a car, when it is not possible to correctly determine the distance to objects from the eyes.
What other marks are there?
Section 12 also specifies restrictions on the validity of a driver’s license in the relevant categories and subcategories of vehicles:
- AT - for those who are given control of vehicles equipped with an automatic gearbox;
- MS (in category A1) – approved to drive a vehicle only with a motorcycle handlebar and seating position in the presence of category A and the absence of category B;
- ML (in category M) – in the presence of medical restrictions.
Additionally, for medical reasons, the following designations may be indicated in section 14 of rights:
- MC – manual control;
- AT – control of vehicles with automatic transmission;
- APS - the car must be equipped with an acoustic parking system;
- GCL – the driver can drive only with the use of vision-correcting medical devices;
- CF/HA - the driver can drive only with the use of hearing-correcting medical devices.
What does the AT mark on your license mean?
In fact, the AT (automatic transmission only) mark on a driver's license is not new for 2021. It was introduced a long time ago, and the AT mark made it possible, even when studying at a driving school, to practice in a car with an automatic transmission, then pass an exam on the same type of car and, accordingly, receive the right to drive with the AT mark. This mark means that the driver has the right to drive a car only with automatic transmission. But such a driver cannot drive a manual transmission.
But starting from 2021, this mark will also be added for persons with medical limitations that do not allow them to fully drive a manual car. Such restrictions may be, for example, partial immobility of the arms or one arm, the driver’s absence of one arm, the absence of a left leg, and the like.
What are the special marks in PTS and how to decipher them
If you look at the PTS sheet, on each half of the sheet where the car’s data is written, there is a column on the side called “special notes.” It is here that the main changes are made in the fate of the car while it is in the owner’s possession.
It is important to understand that the PTS is the most important document and if there are any errors in filling it out, the car may be evacuated to a impound lot.
Many motorists, seeing marks in this column, suspect that something is wrong with the car. And this often scares future buyers. In fact, all these marks are clearly regulated.
Original and duplicate
Often in advertisements for the sale of a car the phrase “Original PTS” appears. For those uninitiated in the auto world, these are just words, but those who have changed more than their first steel horse understand the value of this phrase.
She says that the seller has the first and only passport of this car in his hands. Of course, this is not a miracle, but it still significantly reduces the risk of fraudulent activities when selling a car.
The original PTS is received once in a lifetime. It is issued:
- manufacturer for domestic cars;
- customs service - when crossing customs for imported cars.
But in life there are a variety of events, ranging from natural disasters to banal forgetfulness. Cases where owners lost their title for a number of reasons are far from uncommon.
But since without this document it is impossible to carry out any actions with the car, it is necessary to obtain a new title. The basis for receipt will be the loss of the old one.
To do this, you will have to contact the traffic police and write an application for a duplicate, attaching documents that confirm ownership of the car and the identity of the applicant.
You will also have to pay a state fee. It does not matter how exactly the document was lost, with the exception of theft. In this case, you will have to attach a police certificate.
After reviewing the application, the owner will be issued a PTS. This document will have a different number and will have o.
The second most common case of issuing a duplicate is a document that is completely covered with writing.
The PTS records the change of owner and when purchasing an imported car, the first three columns will be divided among themselves:
- the customs service that issued the PTS;
- a car dealer who sold a car;
- the owner who purchased the car from a dealer.
Also, data is entered into the PTS not only when the owner changes, but when the original owner’s passport data changes. Such re-registration is not uncommon, for example, changing a woman’s surname upon marriage.
What does the MC mark on your license mean?
The MC (manual control only) mark in the license plate is placed for drivers who have medical indications for driving cars only with a manual transmission. To be honest, it is difficult to imagine what contraindications these should be and what exactly should not work for a person in order for him to be medically contraindicated to operate a machine gun. If you have thoughts regarding this, be sure to share them in the comments.
However, there is such a mark in the rights and in practice it is placed in the presence of such restrictions.
How are special marks in PTS deciphered?
Everyone knows that the main document of a car is the technical equipment passport or the so-called PTS.
Dear readers! The article talks about typical ways to resolve legal issues, but each case is individual. If you want to find out how to solve your particular problem , contact a consultant:

Using it you can trace the entire fate of the car, see its owners and note what actions were carried out with the car.
What does the GCL mark on your license mean?
Another mark on a driver’s license that sets restrictions for people with poor vision is GCL (must wear glasses or contact lenses). This checkbox is indicated if you constantly have to carry vision correction devices with you. The GCL mark prohibits driving a car without having such devices with you and using them.
Who marks
Despite the fact that some special marks appear on technical details, such as changing the number, only traffic police or customs officers can make marks in the PTS.
Any marks in the PTS are a reason to take a closer look at them. Because among them there are completely harmless ones that simply record certain registration actions, and there are those that may well make you think about the need to purchase this car.

What is the fine for violating the regulations on license marks?
All of the above marks on a driver’s license prohibit driving a car without devices or the type that these marks provide. And for violating such a ban there is a fine. Which? According to the law, if, for example, you drive a car without parking sensors, and you have an APS mark on your license, then you do not have the right to drive a car of this type.
Therefore, for such a violation a fine is provided, regulated by Part 1 of Article 12.7 of the Code of Administrative Offenses for lack of the right to drive - from up to 15 thousand rubles. The specific amount of the fine will depend on a number of mitigating or aggravating circumstances. For example, whether a fine was already imposed as a result of an accident (the lack of driving rights led to the accident as an aggravating factor), whether the driver admits guilt, repents, is a minor or a pregnant woman, and a small number of other circumstances (mitigating, aggravating).
Decoding of special marks in PTS
A passport for a specific vehicle contains information not only about its parameters, but also about all other additional details, including the owners, as well as manipulations related to registration. This document is presented in the form of a sheet in A4 format. In addition, the passport has special degrees of protection, making it almost impossible to falsify such a document and illegally sell the vehicle.
Only information about one car is entered into one document. Thus, if an individual is the owner of several vehicles at the same time, then he must have a number of vehicles equal to the number of property objects. Each passport has its own unique code, which identifies a specific vehicle.
In the PTS, on the left side of the information displaying the vehicle parameters, there is a special column intended for making special notes. It is thanks to ciphers of this kind that the maximum amount of information can be placed in a document and at the same time fill a minimum amount of space.
Main notes in a car passport
When I was selling my car, a huge number of potential buyers were interested in whether it had an original title or a reissued title. Everyone only wanted to hear information that the document was an original. This is due to the fact that it is almost impossible to fake it, unlike a duplicate.
If the owner loses the car passport, the document is stolen, or for some other reason there is a need to obtain a duplicate, then the corresponding mark is placed on it. Often, if individuals see such a word as duplicate in their passport, then this automatically leads them to think that they may fall for the scammers’ trick, and they are afraid to make a purchase.
However, it is not always worth refusing to purchase a car for which the owner does not have the original title, since its duplicate could be obtained due to lack of space (for example, when several owners changed).
In addition, there are a number of legislative acts on the territory of the Russian Federation that stipulate the obligations of individuals to pay certain fees. As for car owners, they are required to pay material resources for the disposal of the vehicle, which will be carried out in the future.
This action must be performed in order to preserve the environment. This type of contribution is paid once. The corresponding entry in the register serves as proof that the car owner has paid the tax for disposal. In addition, a mark indicating payment of the fee is also placed in the passport.
In some situations, there is no need to pay for a disposal procedure that will occur in the future. We are talking about a preferential category of Russians. However, if there is still no entry in the PTS confirming payment of this contribution, then the new owner will need to pay.
Transcript of some recordings from PTS
On the first page of the passport there should be a space reserved for making special notes, which are usually indicated using abbreviations. It is important to keep in mind that marking yourself is strictly prohibited. Only employees of the state automobile inspection have the right to do this. In addition to abbreviations, PTS can be stamped with seals indicating certain facts.
Often, car owners or individuals who are planning to buy a car begin to study the title, but seeing various types of abbreviations, due to their ignorance, they spend a lot of time deciphering them. In this regard, I would like to talk about how the most common abbreviations that can be found in vehicle passports are deciphered:
- UVEOS. In this abbreviation, the letter U stands for device, the letter B for call, E for emergency, O for operational, and C for service. Thus, individuals whose car passports contain an abbreviation such as UVEOS have the opportunity to use the emergency call service for emergency service personnel using a special device. This may need to be done in the event of traffic accidents, natural disasters, or any other emergency situations. Marks in the PTS indicating the presence of such devices are made in accordance with special rules. Not only this abbreviation must be indicated, but also the serial number of the equipment.
- SKTS. Such an abbreviation is easy not only to decipher, but also to remember, if conditionally divided into two parts. SC – design compliance, and TS – vehicle compliance. The fact of compliance is confirmed not simply by entering such an abbreviation as SKTS into the vehicle passport, but also by issuing the corresponding certificate to its owner. Special assessment experts, as well as employees of a car dealership, can provide a document of this kind. In addition, the PTS must contain not only this abbreviation, but also the number of the device itself along with the series, as well as the name of the body that issued the certificate and the date it was provided to the owner.
GCL on a new driver's license - what is it?
Nowadays, a driver's license has become a treasure trove of information. Anyone can understand most data. For example, validity period, personal data of the owner of the document. Some marks are more difficult to decipher.
One of these is the GCL mark on your driver's license. It has its own specific meaning and can only be placed in one specific place. Ignoring this mark will lead to an unpleasant situation on the road and a large fine.
Driver's rights functionality
Confirmation of the right to drive - a driver's license - is an integral part of the set of documents confirming the right to drive a car.
Due to its compact size, the document is very convenient to use. It contains a large amount of transmitted information.
In addition to indicating the category of vehicle to which the driver is admitted, all personal data of the owner is written there.
A license can serve to prove identity, just like a passport.
The format of the document confirming the driver’s right to drive was approved by Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia No. 365 in 2009, which deals with the introduction of the certificate into force. Later, adjustments were introduced, according to which in 2021 (starting from April 4), abbreviations that are unusual for drivers began to appear, written in Latin letters in the updated licenses issued.
The new type of certificate retains 14 columns, just like the old one, 9 of which are on the front side.
They state:
- personal data of the driver, filled in from the passport (columns 1–3);
- In No. 4 - points a), b), c) - information about the date of issue of the document, validity period and the issuing authority;
- No. 5 – identification data (series and number), identical to those indicated on the other (reverse) side;
- columns 6–8 – photo of the owner, personal signature and place of residence, registration;
- No. 9 – categories of vehicles permitted for driving.
The reverse side contains the following columns (10–14), arranged in table form (except for columns 13, 14):
- columns 10–11 – the validity period of the certificate will be entered opposite the open category;
- No. 12 is used specifically for making special marks associated with an open category of rights;
- the barcode located to the left of the table is considered column 13;
- No. 14 is reserved for indicating designations associated with all categories permitted for driving, and information about the total length of experience is also entered there.
First, in 2014, the traffic police introduced pictograms of new subcategories (although new documents began to be issued in 2021, the changes were approved in 2014.
) This was done to comply with the established points of the Vienna Convention - an international treaty on bringing traffic rules to a common denominator. Now the processing of driver's documents is as close as possible to Western standards.
With an updated certificate, you can travel on most European highways without problems of mutual understanding with traffic police officers.
Special categories have been introduced - B1 and E. The first (B1) designates permission to drive a vehicle with a motorcycle-type steering wheel, mainly tricycles and ATVs.

The second (E) can be added to the previously entered B, C, D in different variations:
- by adding the E value to category B, a corresponding clarification appears - the driver can cope with the control of a vehicle with a trailer, the total weight of which is less than or equal to 3.5 tons;
- the appearance of E in open category C means that it is allowed to drive a vehicle with a large trailer with more than 2 axles;
- the designation E added to D serves as a permit for driving an articulated passenger vehicle (for example, Ikarus).
The introduction of unusual abbreviations, according to which in April 2016 they began to issue updated licenses, affected only two columns of the certificate:
- No. 12 – used to set restrictions associated with a particular category of transport;
- No. 14 – the total driving experience (since the date of issue of the first license) and clarifications for all open categories are entered (as a rule, these are notes on the state of health and special instructions related to this).
New marks began to appear in these columns, the most frequent being those indicated above (AS and GCL).
Driving a vehicle in violation of the specified special symbols or open categories is severely punished as a serious violation of traffic rules.
For violating special marks when driving a vehicle, a fine is imposed in the same amount as for driving without a license - from 5 to 15 thousand rubles.
The encoded meaning of the entered abbreviations is worth knowing and remembering, because ignorance of the law does not exempt you from obligations. For such an offense, you face administrative liability under Article 12.7 Part 1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation for driving a vehicle without documents confirming permission to drive.
Changes in column 12
Many drivers wonder what the GCL marks and other encodings in the driver’s license mean. 2021 did not bring any fundamentally new designations.
Column 12 has the following abbreviations:
- AS (short for AutomotiveSteering) stands for “automotive-style driving position and steering wheel.” Used to indicate a specific vehicle transmission that falls under control in categories B and B1. Simply put, it means a ban on driving motorcycles and tricycles.
- MS (an abbreviation derived from MotorcycleSteering) is placed in the newly introduced category “B1” and has the meaning: the owner of the license has the right to drive ATVs and tricycles with a motorcycle-style seat and handlebars.
- ML denotes restrictions in motor vehicles of category “M”, justified by medical regulations.
It is absolutely by chance that you can earn this restriction mark at the medical examination to obtain a driver’s license. If, during an examination by an ophthalmologist, you remain silent about your desire to drive vehicles belonging to the “M” category, then the “ML” restriction will be assigned automatically.
As for the AS encoding, its presence is necessary in the following cases:
- The weight of a vehicle permitted for driving does not exceed 3.5 tons.
- The number of cabin seats is less than or equal to eight.
- Driving a vehicle with a trailer weighing more than 750 kg is permitted.
- You cannot drive a motorcycle.
The AS mark is used for subcategory B1. The specified innovation (B1) is used to permit driving motorcycles and tricycles with the following characteristics:
- the vehicle weight (without load) should not exceed 550 kg;
- The vehicle is not capable of accelerating over 50 km/h;
- engine volume no more than 50 cm3.
Thus, if subcategory B1 is marked AS, it means that the driver does not have the right to drive a motorcycle.
Changes in column 14
At this point, most often, along with information about the length of service and clarification of some medical data (they can enter the Rh factor and blood type if desired), one encounters the mysterious GCL mark on a new driver’s license - what is it? Taboo on driving a vehicle without vision correction devices.
Will it be glasses or lenses - the choice is up to the person behind the wheel. By the way, in the photo that is taken for the VA, the driver must look like he would be behind the wheel. If he uses glasses, then he must be photographed for his license wearing them. If using lenses, the principle is the same, although they are not visible in the photo.
This rule is provided to make it easier for a traffic police officer to recognize the owner of a document.
If paragraph 14 in the VU is supplemented with the GCL mark (mustwearglassesorcontactlenses), then the driver is required to wear glasses or contact lenses when driving a vehicle.
In addition to the Latin abbreviation about the need to wear glasses or lenses, column 14 may contain other encodings:
- MC (short for ManualControlOnly) - the driver has medical indications for using manual control when driving the vehicle.
- AT (short for Automatic Transmission) - vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission are allowed to drive. The mark will be given to those who passed the exam on a vehicle with an automatic and trained on the same model. For those who have been trained to drive a manual vehicle, there are no restrictions - they can drive both manual and automatic.
- APS (short for AcousticParkingSystemOnly) - it is allowed to drive cars with APS - parking sensors that sound an audible signal.
- HA (short for MustWearHearingAid/CommunicationAid) or CF (short for CommunicationAid) – you must wear hearing aids when driving.

The changes will help law enforcement officers (both on our roads and abroad) immediately understand that in front of them is a person with disabilities.
In addition to the introduced adjustments, column 14 also records the total driving experience. The countdown begins from the moment you receive your first certificate.
If desired, data on blood type and Rh factor can be entered in this column. In the event of a serious incident, this can save time for emergency doctors and save the life of the license holder.
Important for drivers
In the old licenses, marks were written in words, without encoding. In the updated rights, the introduced abbreviations significantly save space and allow you to enter more data.
The newly introduced encodings can be entered in columns 12 and 14. No. 12 is reserved for marks regarding the open category. In No. 14, along with the general driving experience, restrictions apply to all categories permitted for driving. Most often this concerns medical restrictions.
The GCL mark (it can only appear in column 14) means that the owner of the license is allowed to drive a vehicle only wearing vision correction devices.
These can be (at the driver’s choice):
- glasses with diopters;
- contact lenses.
Previously, those with visual impairments were less comfortable with the old driver's license. On the back of the document was written a specific device for improving vision necessary for driving a car - glasses or lenses. Now, with the new abbreviation, the driver can decide for himself what is more comfortable for him.
The GCL encoding on a driver's license appears based on a certificate from an ophthalmologist. They receive it at the stage of mandatory passing of a medical commission before obtaining a license.
If visual acuity does not meet that required for full driving, a mark is placed in column 14. Then, to maintain traffic safety, the driver will need appropriate auxiliary devices.
Question: What should I do if vision correction has been performed and there is no longer a need to use glasses or contact lenses?
Answer: The inspectorate responsible for road safety must be notified about this.
After surgery or other manipulations to restore vision, you must bring a certificate to the local traffic police department. After replacing your license, if you do not have GCL coding, you will be able to drive without vision-correcting devices.
