To save your own time and not wait in the general queue, it is recommended to make an appointment in advance using the State Services portal. In this case, the applicant will only have to arrive at the traffic police department on the appointed day and time.

When submitting an application to register a vehicle through State Services, the applicant will be able to immediately pay the state fee using a bank card, receiving a 30% discount.

Registration procedure

The procedure for registering a factory trailer is no different from registering a car and proceeds in the following order:

  1. the car owner contacts the traffic police, submits the prepared documents and writes an application to register the vehicle;
  2. after the traffic police officer accepts the documents, the owner of the trailer submits it for inspection and verification of the VIN code;
  3. if no complaints arise from the traffic police, within an hour the motorist will be able to pick up the completed documents, after which the tow hitch will be considered registered.

What to do with a homemade device?

If the trailer is homemade, the owner will not be able to provide the vehicle inspection with a vehicle passport , which is usually issued by the manufacturer. In this case, the motorist will first have to undergo a specialized examination, which should confirm the safety of the device and evaluate its technical condition.

Based on the expert assessment, the traffic police will make a decision on state registration. If registration is refused, the owner will receive a written refusal indicating all existing deficiencies.

Details on how to pass the examination and register a homemade trailer with the traffic police can be found here.

How to register a vehicle?

To operate a trailer, you will need to install a towbar (if it is not provided as standard equipment of the vehicle). In the event that an original trailer hitch is installed, selected according to markings in catalogs or based on the manufacturer’s recommendations, registration of additional equipment will not be required.

However, if the towbar is homemade, its characteristics may differ from the factory ones. The installation of such a device will be equivalent to changes in the design of the vehicle. In this case, registration of the vehicle will be mandatory.

How to deregister?

According to current legislation, the owner of a trailer can sell it without deregistering it. However, the owner may need to deregister if :

  • disposal of the device;
  • vehicle theft;
  • termination of operation within the Russian Federation and export abroad.

Also, the former owner of the trailer has the right to suspend registration if the new owner does not register the trailer within 10 days.

When deregistering a vehicle for the purpose of disposal, it is necessary to take into account that in this case it will no longer be possible to renew the registration.

Step-by-step instruction

If the owner of the trailer decides to deregister it with the traffic police, you will need to adhere to the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Collect the necessary package of documents and fill out an application for deregistration of the trailer (this document can also be submitted directly to the traffic police).
  2. Submit the prepared documents to the MREO traffic police officer.
  3. Where possible, provide the trailer for inspection and VIN number verification.
  4. Wait for the documents confirming deregistration to be issued and pick them up from the traffic police officers.

Reference! You can also submit an application to terminate the registration of a trailer through the State Services portal, and then provide the original documents to the traffic police at the appointed time.

Required documents

In order to remove the tow hitch from registration, the car owner will need the following documents :

  • passport identifying the applicant;
  • vehicle passport (PTS);
  • certificate of registration (CTC);
  • a document confirming the existence of grounds for deregistration (for example, a purchase and sale agreement, a certificate of theft, a traffic accident, etc.);
  • written statement from the owner.

Cost and deadlines

Deregistration of a trailer in case of loss, sale, theft or complete disposal will be free of charge. For partial scrapping, a state fee of 350 rubles will be required. Finally, if the trailer is exported outside the Russian Federation, the cost of issuing transit numbers for the trailer will be 800 rubles.

If all the necessary fees are paid in full, and the traffic police officers have no complaints about the documents, the trailer will be deregistered with the traffic police immediately on the day of the application.

Although a motorized vehicle is required to move a trailer, registration of the trailer will be required in any case . Some difficulties may await motorists who decide to register homemade devices. However, if the owner purchased a factory trailer, registration or deregistration will be carried out similarly to other vehicles.

Fine for an expired car purchase agreement

The purchase and sale agreement does not have an expiration date, so there is no need to worry about what will happen if it expires. However, by late agreement we mean a 10-day delay in registering the car by the new owner. In the case of purchasing a car, this period is calculated from the date of conclusion of the purchase and sale agreement.

If you do not have time to register your car, you will be held administratively liable. The fact that the car purchase and sale agreement has expired upon registration will certainly be noticed by the traffic police officers, since to register a car, the purchase and sale agreement must also be presented among all the documents.

If you have expired the car purchase and sale agreement, pay the fine and register the car as soon as possible. There are no other options.

The rules for registering a car if the purchase and sale agreement for a car has expired are no different from regular vehicle registration. You will need the same set of documents and an application for car registration. Information on what documents need to be collected, as well as a sample of filling out the application, can be found in the article “Documents for registering a car with the traffic police.”
