Various categories of driver's licenses in Belarus are issued by the country's state traffic inspectorate to drivers who have previously completed specialized preparatory courses. Since mid-2011, a new type of driver’s license has been introduced in the republic. After Belarus has signed the Vienna Convention, the rights have an international format and can be used in any country that has also signed this convention, for example, a driver’s license issued in the Republic of Belarus can be used in the countries of the European Union, the Russian Federation and vice versa.

For persons temporarily staying or residing in the country, a driver's license in Belarus issued by a foreign state is valid if it complies with the requirements of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which was signed on November 8, 1968 in Vienna. Foreign citizens who have moved to the territory of the Republic of Belarus for permanent residence have the right to drive vehicles within 90 days from the date of receipt of a passport or residence permit in Belarus. After 90 days, they need to obtain a driver's license of the Republic of Belarus.
Why are rights divided into categories?
The need is due to the fact that the definition of “motor vehicle” includes passenger cars and trucks, as well as buses, special equipment, motorcycles, and scooters. These types of transport differ significantly in size, driving characteristics, and design features. Accordingly, operating each of them requires specific skills: for example, a motorcycle driver without appropriate retraining will not be able to drive a truck.
This is reflected in the classification of rights: each document clearly indicates what types of transport its owner can drive. The current categories are shown in the table.

For the purposes of issuing driving licenses, motor vehicles, combinations of vehicles, and self-propelled vehicles are divided into categories and subcategories.
Mechanical vehicles (except for wheeled tractors) and vehicle combinations are divided into categories and subcategories, designated by capital letters of the Latin alphabet and Arabic numerals - “AM”, “A”, “A1”, “B”, “C”, “D” ", "BE", "CE", "DE", "F", "I":
category " AM " - mopeds;
category " A " - motorcycles;
subcategory “ A1 ” - motorcycles with an engine displacement not exceeding 125 cubic centimeters and a maximum power not exceeding 11 kilowatts (light motorcycles);
category “ B ” - cars whose technically permissible total weight does not exceed 3,500 kilograms and the number of seats for which, in addition to the driver’s seat, does not exceed eight; a category “B” vehicle coupled to a trailer, the technically permissible total weight of which does not exceed 750 kilograms; a category “B” car coupled with a trailer, the technically permissible total weight of which exceeds 750 kilograms, but does not exceed the unladen weight of the car, and the technically permissible total weight of the car and trailer forming the train does not exceed 3500 kilograms in total;
category " C " - cars, with the exception of those belonging to category "D", the technically permissible total weight of which exceeds 3500 kilograms; a category “C” vehicle coupled to a trailer, the technically permissible total weight of which does not exceed 750 kilograms;

Main categories of driver's licenses with decoding
Table of 5 classes of educational institutions:
- "A" - motorcycles.
- "B" - passenger cars.
- "C" - trucks.
- "D" - buses.
- "M" - mopeds.
Categories of driver's licenses
You need to know the differences between a motorcycle and a car.
Motorcycles
Motorcycles include two-wheeled vehicles with a special sidecar. The absence of a stroller is allowed. The weight of a curbed motorcycle (fuelled and fully loaded) cannot exceed 400 kilograms.
Category “A” allows driving motorized four or two-wheeled vehicles using a motorcycle power plant. Weight - less than 400 kg.
A driver who has a special permit to drive motorcycles automatically receives a separate category “M” - mopeds.
Cars
Category “B” includes 4-wheeled cars or trucks with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons and a number of seats not exceeding 8. With such documents you are allowed to drive:
- on passenger cars;
- on light commercial vehicles (Gazelle).
You are only allowed to drive cars that have a vehicle registration certificate. If a driver is caught driving a Gazelle, which has less than 8 seats, but according to the documents it belongs to category “D”, then he will face punishment.
"B" allows the driver of a light vehicle to haul a trailer on the back.
Important condition: weight 0.75 tons, total tandem mass - 3500 kg.
Trucks
Trucks include vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 tons. There is no upper limit. Extra-heavy trucks are allowed - heavier than 7500 kg.
Interesting fact! Having such a document, you cannot drive light trucks under 3.5 tons if “B” is missing.
Buses
A bus is not a car, but a separate classification of a driver's license. Having category “D”, you are allowed to drive any bus of any weight and size, with the exception of “accordion buses”. It is allowed to use a special trailer with a total weight of less than 0.75 tons.
Mopeds
This mark appeared in 2013 and allows the driver to drive mopeds and light quadricycles. The category is assigned automatically upon receipt of any other. Even if it is not noted on the license, the driver of a truck will be absolutely legally able to drive a moped.
VU categories have several features:
- You cannot obtain the rights of one class until another is opened. For example, you cannot obtain a permit for a bus or trailer until the candidate driver passes the truck license.
- It is possible to obtain a driver's license for a truck without going through a passenger license.
- You are allowed to get a motorcycle without other categories.
How are additional categories assigned?
Training for category “B” takes place at any driving school. To obtain the remaining categories, you need to undergo retraining. You can get a driver's license for the right to drive a tram, trolleybus and bus through special courses. Training can last up to 5 months, it depends on the chosen category.
You can also get additional categories quite easily. If the driver is eligible for a higher category, then training for a lower category is not necessary; you can simply pass a practical exam and open the corresponding category.
- — Holders of category C who successfully pass the practical exam can receive categories “A1” and “B”
- — Category “B” allows you to take a practical exam of category “A1”, so the future driver gets the opportunity to drive cars and motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cc.
- — A person who has undergone retraining from category “B” to category “D” gets the opportunity to open category “C”.
- — People who have received education (special or higher) in the field of cars have the opportunity to immediately take the exam for categories “A1” and “B”, in some cases they are even admitted to category “C”. To do this, you must take with you the original or a certified copy of the diploma.
The Slutsk traffic police explained how to obtain licenses of categories A1 and AM
Every year, with the onset of the spring-summer period, the number of accidents involving drivers of motorcycles, mopeds and other mechanical two-wheeled vehicles increases. The main factor that increases the severity of the consequences of such incidents is non-compliance with the requirements for the use of motorcycle helmets when driving a motorcycle or moped.
Dmitry Semibratov , senior traffic police inspector of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Slutsk District Department of Internal Affairs, told Kur'er about this
An analysis of accident rates shows that the problem of an insufficient level of discipline among drivers of motorcycles and mopeds (scooters) still remains relevant and is often a cause or a contributing factor in road accidents.
As long-term practice shows, most often in such accidents young people aged 16 to 25 years old, who drive motorcycles without a driver’s license and often while intoxicated, are injured and killed. It is these two conditions that cause serious consequences.
Slutsk traffic police reminds that in accordance with the law,
- in categories “AM” (scooters) and “A1” (motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 125 cc inclusive), without undergoing training (retraining) in educational organizations, persons who have reached the age of 16 are allowed to take exams for the right to drive a vehicle.
- for category “A” (volume over 125 cubic cm) - from 18 years of age.
In both cases, theoretical and practical exams are taken.
Those wishing to obtain a driver's license for the right to drive a moped (scooter) of category "AM" pass only a theoretical exam.
When granting the right to drive a vehicle of category “A”, the right to drive a vehicle of subcategory “A1” is simultaneously granted and, vice versa, if the person reaches 18 years of age.
The examinee must complete the following elements:
- driving in a straight line with gear shifting from low to high and vice versa;
- control at minimum speed without lowering your feet from the footrest (“rut board”);
- performing turns and turns of small radius (overall “circle”, “snake”, “figure eight”).
A practical motorcycle test is considered failed if the examinee:
- did not complete the “rut board” element;
- did not complete the “eight” element;
- turned off the engine twice when starting off;
- I was twice unable to shift gears when stopped with the engine running.
To obtain a driver’s license for the right to drive vehicles of categories “AM”, “A1”, “A”, you should contact the registration and examination departments of the State Traffic Inspectorate at your place of residence.
You must have the following documents with you: a passport, a valid medical certificate of health and fitness to drive vehicles of categories “AM”, “A1”, “A”, documents confirming payment.
The State Traffic Inspectorate appeals to all citizens. If you witness the movement of a drunk motorcyclist or motorist, or you know that someone is driving their “iron horse” without a driver’s license, then immediately call line 102. Only through joint efforts can we achieve safety on the roads.
In order to avoid accidents, the traffic police department of the Slutsk district police department strongly recommends that drivers of mechanical two-wheeled vehicles and cyclists comply with traffic rules.
PREVIOUSLY. A biker with 30 years of experience from Slutsk told what a motorcyclist should think about so as not to get killed and not kill others
TO THE POINT. For 11 days the traffic police will pay special attention to motorcyclists
In order to reduce the number of accidents involving motor vehicles, a republican preventive campaign “Open the season without violations” will be held from April 24 to May 4.
