How to check whether the sold car is registered with the traffic police by the new owner

After selling a car, there is a possibility that the new owner will not re-register the vehicle in his name within the allotted time frame. After all, not all buyers are respectable.

To be able to control everything and avoid troubles that may occur under a sales contract, you should find out ways to find out whether a car has been deregistered with the traffic police via the Internet.

The seller must exercise caution to avoid paying transport tax on the vehicle sold in the future.

In addition, if the car is registered in his name, and the new owner gets into a road accident before re-registration and flees the scene of the accident, then the old owner will have to answer all questions from the police. Because according to the documents, the car belongs to him.

Reasons for deregistration

When buying a car, a person must take care of re-registering it in his name.

The seller should check this. After all, it is in his interests how quickly he will be relieved of his duties on the vehicle.

The new owner is given 10 days to deal with all the formalities after purchasing the car.

If the buyer is in no hurry to re-register, the transport tax will not be paid and a penalty will be charged. All fines and notifications will be sent to the seller.

Therefore, the main reason for re-registering a car is the peace of mind of the seller. Only by knowing how to check whether a car has been deregistered via the Internet can the former owner protect himself from unscrupulous buyers.

And also checking the deregistration of a car is necessary when the car has served a certain period and is sent for recycling.

Disadvantages of the online method of checking a car

NumberThe VIN number can be viewed directly on the car or in the documents.
The main disadvantage of this method is that the State Traffic Inspectorate website has databases on the car since 2015, older databases are in closed access and are not used during inspection. Therefore, not all data can be found for cars manufactured before 2015. In addition, on the website of the State Traffic Inspectorate you can not find out all the data about the car; it does not receive information from insurance agents, and information about the car being pledged may not be current.

A complete list of information about a car by VIN code can only be determined on paid services, since they have an expanded database.

Bases
Due to outdated databases, vehicle data is not always accurate

Also, the website of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate and State Services may work intermittently and does not always show correct data. In some cases, it may not show vehicle data. Then you need to wait a few hours for the system to restart and try again.

Checking the vehicle status after sale

The question of how to find out whether a car was deregistered after sale can be solved using the following methods:

  1. 10 days after concluding the purchase and sale agreement, go personally to the traffic police and write a statement. It is drawn up in the name of the head of the traffic police department with a request to inform about the status of the sold car at the moment. Copies of all documents containing information about the vehicle must be attached to the application. After 30 days, the applicant will receive a response. The procedure is free.
  2. You can find out whether a sold car is deregistered in 2021 via the Internet.

Sometimes the car is not registered, but the debt and penalties for transport tax continue to arrive.

In this case, you should contact the tax service and request information about the transfer of taxes. In the future, this can be used to clarify circumstances.

How to find out if a vehicle has been re-registered after sale?

The obligation to register vehicles is established by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 938 of 1994, and the current procedure for such registration is established by Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation No. 1001 of 2008. However, car buyers are often in no hurry to fulfill this obligation. Therefore, sellers may want to check who the car is currently registered to and whether the new owner has re-registered it.

The most obvious way to do this is to contact directly the MREO of the traffic police department in which the registration actions were to take place.

This is best done on the 11th day after the purchase and sale agreement has been signed. In this case, the former owner himself can deregister the car in his own name, thereby protecting himself from possible fines and taxes.

To do this you need:

  1. Apply for an appointment at the MREO.
  2. Show there your passport, purchase and sale agreement and write an application.

After this, the car will be “removed from the seller” in any case. Whether the new owner will register is his personal problem.

In addition, you can request information without submitting an application for deregistration. However, the traffic police has the right to refuse to provide such information, because they do not have the obligation to inform each applicant about registration actions. Therefore, the former owner must:

  1. prove that he needs this information in connection with existing violations of his legal rights;
  2. support your statement with relevant evidence.

If there is confirmation, you should expect a response from the traffic police MREO within 7-10 days.

Checking via the Internet

In the modern world, many are interested in whether it is possible to find out via the Internet whether a car has been deregistered. This question is becoming more and more relevant.

This procedure is quite simple and fast. There are several methods for its implementation.

  • go to the “Authorities” section;
  • go to the page “Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation”;
  • select “Registration of vehicles and trailers for them”.

After this, an application will open where you must enter all the requested data. If filled out correctly, the request will be processed and the user will receive a response.

In addition, you can simply print this application form from the website and take it to the traffic police department.

Registration on the State Services portal can be useful for resolving many issues regarding contacting authorities without personal contact, but through this service. This will save time and find out answers to your questions quickly and without queues.

Autocode

You can find out about deregistration of a vehicle through the Autocode portal - https://avtokod.mos.ru. This is an excellent resource to help resolve this issue.

The following data is required for implementation:

  1. VIN number of the car;
  2. registration certificate.

Having such information, it will be possible to easily check whether the car is registered.

This help service is currently only valid for residents of Moscow and its environs. In the future, it is planned to expand to the entire territory of the Russian Federation.

Traffic police resource

To find out whether the car was deregistered after being sold online, you can use the official website of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate - https://tt.gibdd.ru.

To do this, go to the “Services” section and select “Vehicle check”. Then the following is indicated:

  • engine VIN number;
  • body or chassis number.

After filling out and pressing the button, you must confirm the action with a verification code. Search results can be seen within a minute.

Using this portal, you can find out by the state number whether the car was re-registered, when it was deregistered, etc.

When filling out data, it is very important to write only reliable information in all columns. The fields must be filled out correctly and without errors. Only then will the request via the Internet be processed.

Stages of the procedure

The procedure for registering a technical device is familiar to most car owners. According to the traffic police regulations, you need to register your car in five simple steps:

  1. Preparation of documents;
  2. Payment of duty;
  3. Submitting papers and certificates to the MREO department for verification (at this stage an application for car registration is also drawn up);
  4. Passing a mandatory technical inspection;
  5. Receiving a new PTS.

In addition, citizens can register a car at a place other than their place of registration through the State Services portal, without leaving their home. After all, this service provides a complete list of procedures for re-registration and write-off of movable property.

It is important to know! If a vehicle needs to have its license plates canceled (due to the owner moving, selling, or registering an inheritance), then the above steps for the driver will not change. But if the vehicle is missing due to death or theft, then the technical inspection can be deleted from the provided steps.

Where to go

When asked whether it is possible to register a car in another city, we answered: yes, such a process is provided for by law. This means that applying for the legalization of movable property is allowed not only at the place of registration, but also at any other traffic police department located on the territory of the Russian Federation.

An alternative option for the state structure of the MREO is also considered a multifunctional center, which has the right to accept applications from citizens and verify the attached documents. And the most common application option today is to submit an online application to the State Services portal. Using this site, the driver can easily re-register a vehicle upon purchase, or due to other circumstances, and will receive a 30% discount on the duty payment.

Required documents

In accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, in order to register a car without registration, the owner can get by with a minimum package of papers, which includes:

  • Internal passport of the new owner;
  • Current vehicle title;
  • Written statement;
  • Valid MTPL insurance;
  • Certificate of latest registration of the vehicle;
  • General power of attorney or temporary permission to use a vehicle from the current owner.

It is important to know! When canceling a car's license plate, a police extract may be added to the above list of documents if the car was stolen. In other cases, MREO employees will not require such a piece of paper from a citizen.

Price

The procedures for removing and registering a car in a unified register in the traffic police database occur upon payment by the applicant of a state fee in the amount of 2,000 rubles. Additionally, if the driver re-registers the vehicle in connection with the purchase or intends to register in another region, a paid technical inspection will be added to the total cost of the services of the State Traffic Inspectorate, the price of which does not exceed 200 rubles. Well, the remaining costs (receipts, travel, etc.) fully depend on the plaintiff himself.

Actions after checking the car status

If the car owner contacts the traffic police and does not receive a certificate deregistering the car after 30 working days, you can file a complaint with the court.

If the new owner does not deregister the car after 10 days, you can go to the traffic police and write an application to terminate the registration. After this, the car number and documents will be put on the wanted list.

In this way, you can avoid possible illegal actions of the new owner of the vehicle and the assessment of tax in the name of the former owner.

Not all sales transactions go smoothly . Sometimes they are complicated by prohibitions from judicial, investigative, customs authorities, the investigation department of the traffic police and social protection authorities.

If one of the above departments puts forward a restriction, a person will not be able to sell his car and deregister it until the problem is resolved. It is important not only for the owner, but also for any buyer to check the restrictions on the registration of a car.

In addition, it is useful to understand how the registration history is checked by the traffic police. This will make it possible to find out who owned the car and during what period of time, when it was registered and removed from it.

This is interesting: When is a death certificate issued?

After all, when deciding to purchase a vehicle, it is worth taking a closer look at how often its owners have changed.

If this happens too often and over a short period of time, there is a possibility that there are hidden problems or legal troubles in its design.

There are several ways to check whether a car has been re-registered with the traffic police . You should pay attention to this procedure in order to ensure your own peace of mind and not worry about possible negative consequences.

It’s better to check and protect yourself, because an unregistered car will create problems not only with fines and taxes, but also with the police.

If a person knows how to check the status of a car, and how to obtain other information on registration actions via the Internet, he will be able to solve certain issues at home and save time on trips to the traffic police.

traffic police

If, after the sale of the vehicle, the owner still continues to receive notifications about payment of transport taxes, then most likely the new owner has not yet re-registered the vehicle in his name. But how can you check whether the new owner has registered the car?

To find out information of this kind, the seller can contact the traffic police with an application to provide information about the re-registration of the sold car. However, to do this, he will have to provide the inspectorate representative with compelling arguments regarding the need to issue the required information. It is worth understanding that the traffic police do not simply disclose such information.

Also, the driver’s arguments must be supported by evidence that the owner’s rights have been violated and in order to correct the situation he needs to obtain information about the new owner of the vehicle.

If the seller cannot come to the traffic police to obtain information regarding the re-registration of the vehicle, then he has the right to send an official request to the traffic police to clarify such data. Once the request has been reviewed, a detailed notification of the results will be sent to him.

After reviewing the application, traffic police officers will tell the would-be seller in detail information about the new owner, as well as whether that owner has begun the process of re-registering the purchased car. Sometimes they can even tell you how to act in the current situation.

If the car is not deregistered

The procedure for re-registering the car to the buyer is handled by the buyer himself. Within 10 days from the date of the transaction, the new owner is required to submit documents to the traffic police. After which the car is simultaneously deregistered and registered in the name of the buyer.

If you do not submit the documents, then the withdrawal will not be made. This means that the old owner:

  • continues to pay transport tax, since for the tax authorities the car is registered with him;
  • bears the costs of all fines recorded on traffic cameras (auto-recording);
  • Responsible to victims in the event of an accident.

It is for this reason that the car seller must check whether the buyer has deregistered the car. So to speak, for your own peace of mind.

How to get data

To track the result of re-registration you can:

  • check the data through the services of the state traffic inspectorate website;
  • by electronically contacting the traffic police on your own behalf;
  • personally contact the traffic police;
  • through other sites and resources (autocode, drom ru, auto ru, etc.).

Data should be received after the expiration of 10 days from the date of the transaction.

Through the Internet database of the traffic police

This is considered one of the simplest, fastest and most reliable verification methods. To do this, you will need to go to the State Traffic Inspectorate page.

1. In the “Vehicle check” section, you need to select the “Check registration history with the traffic police” subsection.
2. Next, enter the VIN code of the car in the appropriate field. Click the “Request Verification” button.

3. A verification code appears, enter the numbers in the empty field and click “Request”.

4. After this, a page with information appears within a few seconds to several minutes. The owner's full name will not be indicated, but the date of last registration will be reflected. This data is enough to understand whether the vehicle has been deregistered.

But it is not always possible to check with the traffic police service whether the car has been deregistered. Sometimes the site is not updated or not all data is entered. Therefore, if information is missing, additional verification should be carried out.

Electronic appeal to the traffic police

Again, through the traffic police website, you can submit a request on your behalf to the head of any traffic police department.

3. A new page will appear. On it you should fill out details about the traffic police department where the application is addressed and about yourself.

In the “Text of the appeal” column, formulate a request for information on the registration (in connection with the change of owner of the vehicle).

Attach a scanned copy of the car purchase and sale agreement to your application.

Next, enter the verification text of the image and click “Submit Request.”

1. First, you need to follow the link https://traffic police.rf/request_main.
2. At the bottom of the page, check the “I have read the information” box and click “Submit an appeal.”

4. After some time, within 30 days, a substantive answer will be sent to your email address.

Personal “live” appeal to the traffic police

The surest way to find out whether a car has been deregistered is to visit the nearest traffic police department. A statement requesting information is written there. It indicates that the transaction has been completed, but the seller knows nothing about the conscientious fulfillment of obligations to register the vehicle. Therefore, to protect your rights, you need to obtain information about the registration history of your car.

Copies of the purchase and sale agreement and other documents related to the transaction are attached to the application.

A response will be sent to the postal address specified in the application within 30 days. If there is no answer, then you can complain about such silence to the regional traffic police or go to court.

Other Resources

You can also check whether the car has been deregistered on other websites on the Internet. The main ones:

By visiting the sites, you can receive instructions on requesting data.

But you should know that these sites take information from the traffic police database. Therefore, using data from such commercial resources is only a matter of convenience.

But in any case, before you check whether the car is deregistered online or by going to the traffic police, you need to try to get information from the buyer.

If you still have a phone number, just call him and delicately inquire about the issue of re-registration. It can be explained that this information is needed for issues of calculating transport tax or terminating the MTPL policy, etc.

If the buyer confirms the fact of re-registration, ask for a copy of the vehicle registration certificate in his name. This check will be enough.

Who finds it useful to know information about deregistration of a car?

Information about deregistration of a car will be of interest except to the seller:

To a potential buyer. There are cases when a car is sold by an owner who has not registered it in his name. In this regard, problems may arise when registering the car with the traffic police for the new owner. In addition, there may be other controversial issues regarding previous transactions.

Persons who disposed of their cars. Especially if they did it through other persons by proxy. For example, this issue was dealt with by a car dealer, etc.

Good afternoon Please tell me how to find out if my car has been deregistered. I participated in a trade-in program with a car dealership. There is a purchase and sale agreement. Do I need to go to the traffic police to register something in order for my former car to be removed from me? Thank you

Hello, Elena! The traffic police website has a “Vehicle Check” service. You must enter the VIN code of the car. Information will appear. Among other data, there will be information about registration of the vehicle. If the last registration is dated after the date of your agreement with the car dealership, then the car was re-registered (deregistered). And vice versa.

How to check if a car is deregistered

Check car by VIN code

After selling a car, it is important for the previous owner that the buyer re-registers the car in a timely manner. If the new owner delays registration, then transport tax, payments, fines and penalties, as well as liability for the accident will be presented to the old owner.

To get rid of the headache of re-registering a car, it’s best for you to check the car’s registration yourself. How to do this, and when re-registration procedures are better kept under control, we will talk in this article.

When and why do you need to check your car registration?

According to current legislation, before selling a used car, the old owner does not need to deregister it - after the sale, the new owner will do this independently within ten days. However, if the buyer does not complete the procedure for registering the car on time, then all payments and liability for traffic violations will still remain with the former owner of the car.

In addition, if the new owner, who has not renewed the documents for the vehicle, gets into an accident and flees the scene of the accident, the seller of the car may be subject to punitive sanctions from law enforcement agencies: after all, in the traffic police database he is still listed as the owner of the car. To protect yourself from possible problems after selling a car, it is recommended to promptly check the timing of its re-registration in the name of the buyer.

The need to find out whether a car is deregistered may arise in the event of disposal of a car. If the vehicle was transferred to an intermediary company for subsequent disposal, and transport tax continues to be charged on it, the owner will suffer serious losses. Therefore, it is imperative to check the traffic police data on deregistration of the car.

If a car is stolen, its registration is terminated automatically and the owner is released from obligations regarding the stolen vehicle. In order for such a car to be deregistered, the owner must contact the traffic police department with a corresponding application, and after two or three days check the registration history of the car.

Important: if a car is stolen, registration does not stop, but is only suspended until the car is found and returned to the owner.

Deadlines for registering a car

If the current owner of the vehicle decides to sell his movable property not under a general power of attorney, then it will take him only one day to re-register the title. But with the use of the mentioned agreement, responsibility for the re-registration procedure falls entirely on the shoulders of one buyer. And the period will increase to only 10 days. If the established period is violated, the car will pass into the possession of the old owner, who can cancel the registration.

We found out if the car is deregistered, whether it can be registered and what needs to be done for this. In conclusion, it is worth adding that too frequent changes to the title of one vehicle can lead to confusion and further refusal to legalize it. Therefore, it is better to carry out the mentioned process once every few years.

Online verification options

Today there are several ways to find out whether your car is registered and when it was registered. The easiest and most accessible option to obtain the necessary information is via the Internet.

Official website of the traffic police

You can find out whether the car has been deregistered on the official portal of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Russian Federation. To do this you need:

  1. Go to the traffic police website - in the “Services” section and the “Vehicle check” subsection (https://gibdd.rf/check/auto).
  2. In the verification form that opens, enter the vehicle's VIN number (indicated in the vehicle's passport). If this data is not available for the car, you can use the body or chassis numbers.
  3. Enter the numeric code from the image that opens.

The test results will be displayed on the screen after 1-2 minutes. Information on car registration is contained in the section “Periods of vehicle ownership”. It reflects the periods of time during which the vehicle was registered with the traffic police. You can also find out whether the car is currently registered and when it was registered.

In addition to the registration history, checking the traffic police website allows you to find out the following data:

  • vehicle make/model;
  • body type;
  • year of issue;
  • car color;
  • body/chassis number;
  • engine power and volume;
  • participation in an accident;
  • The presence of prohibitions or restrictions on registration actions;
  • The number of owners the car had.

The verification is free of charge, and the information is current at the time of the request.

State Services Portal

The service was developed specifically for recipients of government services, but for 2021 it is not yet possible to check the car registration history on the website. But you can re-register the car. To do this, you need to register in the system and confirm your account.

  1. After confirming your account status, log in to the State Services website.
  2. Select the "Services" section.
  3. Go to the “Authorities” subsection and select “Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation”.
  4. Go to the Vehicle Registration tab (at the bottom of the page).
  5. Go to the section “Registration of documents for purchase, leasing...”.
  6. Select the “Change vehicle owner data” category.
  7. Fill out the form that opens and confirm sending. A system response will be provided after a few minutes.

Help: You can print out the completed application form and take it with you to the traffic police to continue the re-registration procedure.

Check at the traffic police department

If the former owner of the car is not able to obtain the information he is interested in about car registration via the Internet, he can contact the registration department of the traffic police. This should be done no earlier than 10 days after the sale of the car.

In order to find out whether the new owner has deregistered the car, you will need to submit a corresponding application and attach copies of the existing documents for the car (even a written document will do). The applicant will be able to receive a response within 30 working days. This check is free, but you will have to wait a long time.

What to do if the buyer does not re-register the car in his name

After purchasing a car, the new owner has 10 days to register the car in his name. If, after the specified time, the seller discovers that he is still listed as the owner of the vehicle, he has the right to submit an application to the traffic police to terminate the registration.

In this case, the car becomes wanted and the next meeting of the buyer with traffic police officers threatens the new owner with confiscation of license plates and STS.

Portal "Autocode"

You can check your car’s registration using the online service “Autocode” - a young, but already quite popular resource in Russia. The algorithm for checking car registration is simple:

  1. Go to the Autocode website. Select the “Services” section.
  2. In the car check window that opens, enter the VIN number (it is indicated in the vehicle registration certificate). The history of Japanese cars can be checked by body or chassis numbers.
  3. Click “Check car”.

The check takes a few seconds, after which a page opens with a detailed report on the machine, which contains the following information:

  • PTS data;
  • vehicle registration history;
  • participation in an accident;
  • calculation of the approximate cost of restoration work;
  • car mileage;
  • the car is in collateral;
  • presence of fines and so on.

Help: The electronic portal "Autocode" is paid and provides verification results only after payment for the service. For a detailed report you will have to pay about 600 rubles.

How to find out if a car is deregistered

An unpleasant situation happened to our neighbor in the country. He sold the car, but the buyer hesitated and registered the vehicle in his name late. As a result, fines received during the delay were sent to the previous owner. This situation is quite common. To avoid it, you should study the information in this article. Here I have provided answers to the following questions:

  • Grounds for deregistration of a vehicle;
  • Checking the status of the vehicle after sale;
  • How to check registration in the traffic police and via the Internet;
  • What to do after checking.

Grounds for deregistration

The main reason for re-registration is the sale of a vehicle. It is also urgent to check deregistration if the vehicle has already served its required period and needs to be sent for disposal.

When buying a vehicle, a person is obliged to take care of re-registration of the car in his name. The seller must check this factor!

This is important for one simple reason - you can be guaranteed to be freed from responsibilities in relation to a vehicle that actually no longer belongs to you. The new car owner is given 10 days from the date of purchase to register.

Services for checking the deregistration of a car after sale

For convenience, several online portals have been developed that allow you to send a request remotely. You can check whether a car has been deregistered using:

  1. Traffic police website. This is the official portal of the State Traffic Inspectorate. The page contains services that allow you to check fines, drivers and the car itself. You will need to provide vehicle details and request a search. The system will check the databases and then provide the information of interest.
  2. State Services Portal. To submit a request, you must have a verified account. At the moment, the ability to check deregistration is disabled. The portal allows you to perform the operation of re-registering a vehicle.
  3. Service Autocode. The system is designed to check cars. The search is carried out by state or VIN number. The service shows the history of registration actions and allows you to find out whether the car is wanted, pledged or under arrest.

Check through the traffic police

The standard method of verification is a personal visit to the traffic police. After the required 10 days from the registration and conclusion of the purchase and sale agreement, you should come to the organization and write a special request.

It is written in the name of the immediate head of the traffic police. It indicates a request to provide information regarding the status of the car as of the date of the request. The request must be accompanied by copies of documents related to the vehicle and containing information about it. The sender of the application receives a response within 30 days.

This verification option is completely free, but it is not very fast. If you need to find out the condition of the car here and now, you should use methods related to Internet access.

Checking the car via the Internet

Modern people carry out an increasing number of transactions via the Internet. Checking a vehicle for deregistration is no exception. This can be done in different ways.

Public services

To use this portal, you must go through the mandatory registration and authorization procedure in your personal account. Once you have access to the portal, you need to do the following:

  1. Goes to the Authorities tab.
  2. A transition is made to the page of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
  3. Here you select the registration of vehicles and their trailers.
  4. You will be presented with an application form in which you must enter certain information.

If a person fills out everything correctly, he receives an answer. If you need to receive it in writing, if there is no particular urgency, you can print out the submitted application and go with it to the traffic police authorities.

Autocode

Another fairly convenient way to find out whether a vehicle has been removed from the official official register or not. To operate through this portal, you will need to know the following information:
