Appearance
When considering the question of where to look for the PTS series, it should be noted that this act is printed in printing houses. A special form has been developed for it. It has a blue color scheme and the format is A4. The sample document implies that four degrees of protection must be found. This act falls into the unique category.
Its main details include:
- PTS series;
- his number;
- the date on which the issuance was made.
It is established that the first value consists of two numbers and the same number of letters. To write the number you will need to enter a six-digit number. The series and PTS number are displayed on the title page; you need to pay attention to its upper part. Various details will be determined even at the moment when the form is being prepared on which the document in question will subsequently be placed.
Each body that has the authority to issue the certificate in question makes a preliminary order, indicating how many forms it will need. After the batch is fully prepared, the sheets are sent to a certain department authorized to issue them.
PTS information
The document displays the following information:
- VIN – car code (17 characters of letters and numbers that indicate the country of the manufacturer, the date of release from the assembly line and the license plate number);
- Year of manufacture;
- what category does it belong to?
- model;
- engine and chassis license plates;
- body number and color;
- engine power and volume;
- what environmental class does it belong to (Euro -1,2).

A sample PTS of a car displays information about all owners (if the car is not new), changes to technical details. characteristics, issuance of a duplicate document.
What is a PTS series?
Each document has a personal series and sign. Almost all papers have a number; it is necessary to register the car in the general database. The PTS or its duplicate records the type of car, year of manufacture, model.
Each form has its own details.
- A series is two numbers and two letters.
- The number is six digits.
The series can be viewed on the front side of the form. The document is produced in a printing house. The certificate is blue in color and is in A4 format. The certificate has several degrees of protection.
The details are different for each owner. They are assigned during the manufacture of the machine. The company that issues passports for cars places an order for a certain number of forms. Each will have an individual number. When considering a series of documents, you need to pay attention to the letters.
Until 2008, the first letter was T, then it was replaced by U. If the value does not begin with these letters, then we can conclude that the document is fake. The second letter is different for everyone. It doesn't carry any information.
PTS function
A car passport is required to perform any actions related to the vehicle (purchase - sale, registration). There is no need to take it with you. The driver must have a license, insurance and registration certificate, which are presented if necessary.

How to restore a lost title for a car
If you lose your PTS, don’t worry or panic. Any document is subject to restoration. And if you know what to do if you lose your car’s title, this process will go quickly. Here is a list of documents for the traffic police:
- your passport;
- vehicle registration certificate;
- agreement of gift, purchase;
- OSAGO policy;
- state duty;
- personal statement on form.
Next, after you have collected all the necessary documents, you need to know exactly what to do if you have lost your car’s title:
- you need to arrive at the traffic police station in your car and park it on the observation deck;
- transfer a package of documents to the required window;
- after checking the vehicle, an expert document is issued, which must be submitted to the same window as all other documents;
- on the appointed day, receive a duplicate PTS.
Based on the above, it becomes clear what needs to be done if the title of a car is lost. True, the new passport will have a “duplicate” stamp. A misunderstanding may arise when selling a car with a duplicate title. What does it mean? Yes, you just need to invite the buyer to go to the traffic police, where they will confirm the authenticity of the registration certificate. There are cases when a car owner does not lose the title, but it is stolen. If you file such a complaint about theft, a criminal case will be initiated. And a duplicate on the PTS will not be issued until the old port is found. It is worth drawing a conclusion. It is probably better to act according to the principle: what to do if you have lost the title of your car. The cost of replacing a vehicle's title depends on the region and on the specific case: loss of a document, lack of space for records, change of vehicle color, etc.

Algorithm for obtaining PTS
The PTS is issued immediately upon the initial sale of a car at a car dealership along with the purchase agreement.
If a car is purchased on credit, the original is kept in the bank until the owner pays off the cost of the car. In this case, a certified copy is issued, with which the remaining documents are drawn up.

What is a vehicle title?
The meaning of the abbreviation is known to all drivers. PTS is an abbreviation for vehicle passport. It is a document with detailed information about the machine. To some extent, PTS can be called an analogue of a Russian citizen’s passport, but not for a person, but for transport.
When buying a car secondhand, you should pay special attention to its passport. Many people believe that it is enough to inspect the condition of the car itself. They run the risk of being scammed, which can lead to a host of problems. Therefore, before making a transaction to purchase a used vehicle, it is important to study the pictures with the title so as not to stumble upon a fake. To check your passport, it is recommended to use a magnifying glass, which will show the clarity and naturalness of the printed letters. If you have any doubts, you can go to the nearest traffic police post, where its employees will check the documents against the database and tell you whether they are original. If the seller is unscrupulous, then he will most likely refuse this method of verification altogether.
Important! If the car was purchased on credit, the title can be kept in the bank until the debt is fully repaid.
When purchasing a car, the new owner receives a vehicle passport, where he is entered as the new owner. If the car is new, then he will be the first or second person in the documents. When purchasing an old vehicle that was owned by other people, all former owners will also be indicated in the title.
Information about fake PTS and how to protect yourself:
You can get a passport for a car in several places:
- from the former owner;
- at a car showroom;
- from the manufacturer;
- at the customs office.
When transferring or selling a car free of charge to another person, the previous owner puts an appropriate mark indicating the loss of rights to own the car. You can see it in the photo of the PTS of cars that are not being sold for the first time. If a transaction occurs without the involvement of lawyers or a notary, there is a high risk of stumbling upon scammers. The former owner transfers the documents to the new owner along with the car immediately after payment. Re-registration will only be possible if you have the original PTS.

Ask a Question
When purchasing a car at a car dealership, the new owner of the car receives a passport from its employees. He will also need to be registered on site as the owner. Sometimes the previous owners may be indicated on the title of a brand new car. There is no need to worry about this, since even legal entities selling cars are included there.
Another person who issues PTS is the manufacturer. The average buyer will not be able to get it there. The factory transfers the passport for the car only to the dealer, who will later sell the car. The only exception may be foreign manufacturers who have adopted different standards.
You can obtain a passport for a vehicle when importing it from another country at customs. If the car and its new owner pass the necessary checks, and the import of the car is declared legal, then the employees will issue all the documents. The new owner will be entered into the passport, after which he will be able to continue his journey.
Vehicle registration after receiving a registration certificate
The procedure for registering a car when purchasing is not limited to just signing the contract.
To become the full owner of the car, you must register the vehicle at any traffic police department.
To speed up the situation, you can submit an application online on the website of government services or the State Traffic Inspectorate.

Registration of a car upon purchase requires the following documents:
- Registration Applications.
- Receipts for payment of state duty.
- Purchase and sale agreements.
- Insurance.
- PTS and passports of the new owner.
After submitting the documents, the car will be inspected by an inspector and the license plates will be checked against those indicated in the title. If no discrepancies are observed, the car is registered and the new owner is issued a registration certificate.

The details of the new owner are entered into the PTS. If the car has been resold several times and there is no place to enter the information, the owner is given a duplicate document.
Decoding series and numbers
Series and passport are two digits that are the code of the region of the country. They show where the car was registered. Back in 2008, the series began with the letter T or U. If a citizen is a buyer, then he needs to carefully check the region code. The code must be identical to the code of the district that issued the form. Fraudsters may register a non-existent region. The PTS can be completed in writing. Basic characteristics and data are written in lines. The data is recorded and printed on a printer that has a program for printing this type of paper. The region code is always two digits. Fraudsters also often falsify passport forms. Cars without a passport are not cleared at customs.
The region code must be the same as line 22 of the same document. The vehicle is registered at the traffic police department in the territory where the owner lives.
For cars before 2008, the first letter must be T. Newer models have the letter U. However, this marking is not used to describe cars from foreign manufacturers that were assembled in the Russian Federation. The registration number itself is six digits.
If you don’t have the document on hand, you can find the data on the State Traffic Inspectorate website. All you need for verification is your VIN number and driver's license information. You need to go to the “services” section, then select “check car or driver”. Many services provide information about the series and number. The number is assigned on the form and is the serial number of the document.
The procedure for obtaining a duplicate PTS
You can receive a duplicate in 1 day. If additional checks are carried out, the registration period may increase to 30 days.
To re-receive a lost or replace a valid registration certificate, the following data is required:
- passport;
- documents confirming the purchase of the vehicle;
- certificate confirming ownership of the vehicle;
- explanatory note (if lost);
- MTPL insurance policy;
- receipt of payment of state duty.
After providing all the necessary information to the MREO, you need to go through the vehicle inspection procedure. If the registration certificate is lost, the inspector will inspect the car and sign the application. All documents are handed over to the traffic police officer.
How to get PTS?
If you already have a new car in your hands, then you need to think about getting a title for it. As a rule, the PTS is issued together with the purchase and sale agreement. And therefore, unforeseen situations should bypass you. But there is one “but” - if you were given a duplicate PTS instead of the original , be sure to inquire about the reasons for receiving the duplicate.
If the car was purchased abroad, then problems with obtaining a title cannot be avoided. In this case, the responsibility for issuing a technical passport rests with the customs authorities.
This is possible when:
- The customs clearance procedure has been completed;
- The car was released into free circulation in Russia;
- The customs control procedure was completed in the event that customs clearance is not provided for by the rules.
In order to obtain a PTS, it is necessary to pay a visit to the customs office of the subject where the owner of the car lives or is registered. You must have a statement with you.
The statement says:
- The country where the car was produced.
- The circumstances under which the car was purchased.
- Documents confirming all the necessary information.
Note! If you issue a title for a car through customs, then you must have a Euro-4 certificate.
If the application and documentation verification are successful, the customs authorities will issue you with a completed PTS.
Changes in PTS
In case of a change in color, design, or owner of the car, all necessary data is entered into the vehicle title. Changes traffic police data (except for information about the owner).
When painting a car, it is important to remember that you cannot dismantle or modify the marking plate indicating the vehicle's VIN number (depending on the make and model of the car, it can be found in the engine compartment, near the windshield, on the driver's door pillar, or under the floor trim near the front seat ).
This is done so that the traffic police inspector can easily compare colors and quickly register the changed color of the car.
How to correctly indicate in OSAGO
What language are the letters in?
- VIN number;
- make, model, type and category of car;
- year of issue;
- engine, chassis, body numbers;
- power;
- weight;
- environmental class;
- owner registration details.
After the owner has registered his car with the authorized body, he is issued an appropriate certificate. This act has certain details, as well as the document in question. The documentation form is approved at the federal level. With its help, rules regarding transport accounting are regulated.
In what cases is replacement made?
A duplicate PTS is made for several reasons, some of them are harmless, while others are just dangerous when buying a used car. Very often, scammers may be behind a transaction involving the sale of a used car.
Therefore, first of all, ask why there is a duplicate in front of you now.
It is issued in the following cases:
- loss or theft;
- critical physical damage to the document.
These are legal and normal reasons for obtaining a duplicate PTS. As a guarantee, you can ask for a photocopy of the original PTS; the responsible driver always has one.
Criminal cases include the sale of a car that is listed as stolen (the documents were simply falsified) or the original PTS is pledged to a credit institution, and the traffic police reported the loss of the document in order to obtain a duplicate.
What documents are needed to restore a PTS if lost are discussed in the article: what documents are needed to restore a PTS. Is it possible to restore a PTS without the owner? Read here.
How to distinguish a duplicate from the original?
The original PTS is always issued by the vehicle manufacturer. This may be a factory or a company - an official representative of the manufacturer. If the car is imported from abroad, the document is issued by customs authorities. The traffic police only issues a duplicate passport.
The original, as well as the duplicate, is issued only on State Sign forms, has protection in the form of watermarks, three-dimensional images, a hologram (not on all forms) and special security stripes. It is quite difficult to forge a document, but still pay attention to the quality of the paper and abrasions. To do this, examine the paper against the light; the erased letters will be visible.
Please read the information provided in the technical data carefully. Compliance with brand, color, engine size. Be sure to find and check the VIN number, engine number and frame number (for frame cars) with your passport. If the license plates are unreadable, it will be difficult to register such vehicles with the traffic police.
Important! The traffic police never issues the original PTS. The place where the document was issued serves as the main difference from the original. Sometimes copies have Fr.
You can check information about a car using its technical passport at any stationary traffic police station or traffic police department.
