Temporary road signs (yellow background)

What to focus on? Intersections, signs, signs - we analyze each case, as well as situations when lifting restrictions does not work.

It’s a pity that not everyone learned the traffic rules while sitting at a desk in a driving school - sometimes even drivers with many years of experience get confused in standard situations.

And there’s nothing to say about those who “bought a license, but didn’t buy a ride.” To drive confidently, you need to know traffic rules, signs and markings, and it would be a good idea to navigate GOSTs.

But sometimes it’s better to explain “on your fingers.”

What is the coverage area of the speed limit sign?

“Speed limit” - the sign shows how many km/h should be on the speedometer. As it is written, so we go. But this condition cannot continue indefinitely. When does the sign stop working?

Sign coverage area plate

It is installed on the same pole as the required speed sign, and there is no need to rack your brains: the distance of the coverage area is clearly indicated in meters. If there is no sign, then we focus on other instructions.

If after the first restriction sign we encounter another one, it means that the old one is no longer valid - we maintain the speed according to the new requirement. It can be lower in value or higher.

"End of restricted zone" sign

This is the same round sign with a number that limited the speed, but crossed out and without a red frame. This is how we got to it, which means the speed limits ended there. You can drive again as before: in the city 60 km/h, and on the highway 90 km/h. We got onto the highway - 110 km/h.

"The end of all restrictions"

An empty white sign crossed out diagonally - it also signals that all previously prescribed restrictions are lifted.

Intersection or entry/exit from a populated area

A sure sign that the speed limit has ended is an intersection, including a roundabout. But the sign of the beginning or end of a settlement also removes restrictions. Whatever you came across before, focus on that.

By the way, signs of an intersection or populated area take precedence over a sign defining the restricted area. For example, a sign indicates 800 m, and after 500 m an intersection appears: that means that’s it - the restrictions are over, and the sign was installed with an error.

Just don't get confused at the intersections!

If there is no warning sign about the junction of the road, then any exits onto a secondary road and into fields, as well as the junction of a dirt road or track somewhere in the forest, are not an intersection.

The most common mistake with prohibitory signs and their coverage area, or how to understand that the power of the sign has ended

But if you enter the road from adjacent areas (yards, gas stations, businesses, shops), then this is also not considered a full-fledged intersection, which means that the speed limit sign continues to apply to you.

With a settlement, everything is simple: its name indicates that we have entered, and the crossed out name indicates that we have left.

How far are road signs valid?

Do not cancel the sign

We look carefully and remember:

  1. crosswalk
  2. bridge, tunnel
  3. a turn in the road or a U-turn, but without an intersection
  4. “Main Road” sign, which was placed not in front of the intersection, but simply on a section of the road
  5. traffic lights that are not at the intersection, but simply for pedestrians to cross.

- all this does not in any way affect the “Speed Limit” sign and does not cancel its effect. This means we continue to drive at the required speed.

If the coverage area of the speed limit sign on the plate is greater than the distance to the intersection

If it suddenly turns out that the sign under the “Speed Limit” sign says “2 km”, but after one kilometer you find an intersection or the end/beginning of a populated area, then know that the latter cancel the effect of the sign prohibiting moving at a speed higher than the specified one on the sign. That is, an intersection or the beginning/end of a populated area in this case takes precedence over a sign. This is all because in this case, such an organization of the signs is contrary to GOST and means that the road workers placed the sign incorrectly. And GOST clearly states that the range of action on the sign cannot be greater than the distance to the intersection or the nearest populated area or its end.

Effect of temporary signs

When a road is being repaired or something is being built nearby, the speed limit is temporarily reduced in this area - they put up the same speed limit sign, only on a yellow background. But this is the only difference, otherwise everything works the same. See above.

Very often, builders forget to remove temporary signs, and road workers “forget” to put up “End of restricted zone” signs. This needs to be reported to the traffic police, and the more often you bombard them with complaints, the more likely they are to react.

But this is for experienced drivers, and for inexperienced drivers it is better to develop skills and still learn the rules.

What is not the lifting of restrictions?

Road sign action: straight ahead

Many traffic violations occur precisely because of speeding, but not because the driver consciously violates, but because he is confused about what the limit is and what it is not. Therefore, having described above what cancels the effect of the sign, it is worth writing in which cases the restriction continues to apply. The effect of the sign should never be forgotten when:

  • traffic lights, which are designed to allow pedestrians to pass, installed outside intersections;
  • main road signs close to the intersection;
  • pedestrian crossings;
  • bridges and tunnels.

All this does not in any way cancel the effect of the sign, so you need to be very careful, otherwise you can easily break traffic rules and receive an appropriate punishment, which will not please anyone.

What is the end of all restrictions?

The end of the zone of all road restrictions is indicated by sign 3.31 according to the traffic rules. It is a black and white sign where the background of the circle is crossed out by several parallel lines. Such an image with an empty field of a round sign cancels all prohibitions, and with the designation of a specific crossed out indicator inside the circle, only the effect of such.

The end of restrictions sign does not apply to all traffic regulations. A specific list of designations that can be canceled in this way is determined.

Speaking about which signs will cancel the road image about the termination of the designations, the following types should be listed:

  • minimum distance between vehicles;
  • overtaking (including overtaking a cargo vehicle);
  • speed limit;
  • sound signal;
  • stopping or parking;
  • parking on even or odd days of the month.

Other signs provided for traffic coordination will not be subject to the end of the zone of all restrictions sign.

The meaning of the designation in question is to establish a ban on the use of certain types of signs. An example is the following situation. Dismantling work is being carried out on the road, which is temporary. The starting point for work must include special symbols, that is, signs that will coordinate traffic on such a road. Sometimes it is allowed to drive in the opposite direction by crossing a double solid line.

Road sign coverage area Speed limit

Traffic Laws. List of main problems

Many people, especially beginners, get confused about the coverage areas of the restriction sign. This is typical, as a rule, within a populated area and outside it, since the coverage areas are different here and there. And the sheer number of characters will differ, so it’s very easy to get confused.

Effect of a sign within a populated area

The effect of the sign in a populated area begins immediately upon entering the populated area. At the same time, you need to know that there may not be a sign that is familiar to us, but there is another sign that limits the speed. This sign represents the name of the locality on a white background. This means that you can now drive no more than 60 km/h. The speed can only change if there are corresponding signs in the populated area, otherwise you will have to drive at this speed limit to the end of the populated area.

If there is a restriction sign in the populated area itself, then its effect extends to the first intersection or to the end of the populated area. The sign indicating the end of a settlement is not much different from the sign indicating its beginning. The difference is that departure is indicated by the crossed out name of the point.

Also, to indicate the beginning of a settlement, signs with the name of the settlement on a blue background are used. A blue background means that traffic rules in a populated area do not apply to this road, and therefore there is no need to slow down.

Effect of a sign outside a populated area

When leaving a populated area, the driver can safely increase his speed, since the maximum speed outside the city is 90 km/h, and at the same time watch the road very carefully. Since there may be signs “Speed Limit” or signs indicating a populated area, which means that the speed will have to be reduced. The effect of these signs, as already mentioned, extends to the signs or intersections that cancel them.

On highways you can find a maximum permitted speed of 130 km/h, but this is rare and most often you can find a lower permitted speed there, and there are not many highways themselves.

90 and 130 km/h are the default maximum speed allowed, if there are no signs limiting it. As already mentioned, 90 km/h is allowed to drive outside a populated area, and 130 km/h on a motorway, unless there are other speed limit signs.

An intersection that lifts the speed limit is considered an intersection marked with appropriate signs.
