According to the law, compulsory motor liability insurance is a mandatory document for all drivers, so failure to comply with it is fined, and the issue of meeting deadlines remains very relevant. Because of this, many vehicle owners are interested in whether it is possible to obtain this car policy in advance or extend it until the end of the current validity period.
Re-concluding a contract in advance is necessary in quite common cases, and it is important to figure out how many days before the expiration of the current insurance you can conclude a new version of the deal. What circumstances should you pay attention to in this situation?
How to buy a new policy if the old one has not expired?
Domestic legislation in 2021, in principle, does not limit the right of drivers to take out new insurance if the validity period of the old copy has not yet expired. Such a prohibition is not contained either in the law on compulsory motor liability insurance No. 40, or in other insurance rules of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation or related regulations.
At the same time, it is worth remembering that by default, every car insurance contract is public, so it has significant restrictions. For example, the Civil Code of the Russian Federation and road safety requirements imply for such contractual relations the seller’s obligation to conclude a new transaction at the buyer’s first request.
From this it follows that the company is obliged to sell the mentioned service. But at the same time, the law allows firms to consider any application for a whole month (Article 445), and allocates another month for discussing the protocol of disagreements.
Minimum duration of insurance
It all depends on what category the vehicle belongs to, there are three in total:
- Cars that are operated only on the territory of the Russian Federation . The owner can insure such a car for any period of time, but no more than 1 year and no less than 3 months. Most often, seasonal insurance is chosen by drivers who use their car only part of the year (for example, for trips to the country in the summer).
- Vehicles with a transit license plate . In this case, the policyholder can insure such a car for no more than 20 days. This temporary insurance is intended to enable the driver to bring his vehicle to the place of registration with the traffic police or the place of inspection.
- Vehicles that are registered outside the Russian Federation . Most often these are cars used by travelers. Such car owners can purchase a civil liability contract for a period of no more than 15 days and no less than 5 days. Even if the driver of such a car plans to enter the territory of the Russian Federation for only 1 day.

How many days before the expiration date can I apply?
In fact, early receipt of the next MTPL policy is allowed only 30 days before the expiration of the previous document. But some organizations independently extend this period to 2 months, so more current and accurate information on this issue should be obtained directly from your company’s office. Although formally there are no strict restrictions and by law it is possible to buy new MTPL insurance for:
- day;
- week;
- month;
- 3 months or more.
Only sometimes insurers specifically refuse to issue insurance when there is a long period left before its validity begins. It is logical in such a context to clarify that a request to issue a policy with a start date of more than 1-2 weeks may result in a refusal from the company. But in this case, your rights as a client will be violated.
So the option of filing a response complaint is also not very appropriate here. If you start filming or demanding a written argument for refusing a request to sell insurance much earlier than the start of the action, then the representative may immediately change his decision, because then there will be a good reason not to sell you the policy.
According to Art. 426 and 445 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation indicate that car owners have the right to agree on the terms of insurance under MTPL for about 30 days. And in order to regulate the protocol, the regulations also provide the same period - a similar extension rule was relevant until 2015.
Previously, drivers bought a motor vehicle license almost 60 days before the old version expired, doing so ahead of schedule. But then RSA began to re-fix tariffs for Green Card agreements every month, so the previously agreed period was halved (to complete all registration procedures).
Therefore, already in 2021, you can insure a vehicle ahead of schedule by purchasing an MTPL policy online or directly in the office only 30 days before the previous contract expires. But you won’t be able to draw up a contract early - the insurance company will probably refuse if you perform such manipulations even 31 days before the expiration date of the old copy.
Who can perform this procedure?
You can renew your auto liability policy at any insurance company . Today it is possible to renew your policy without leaving your home. You can renew your contract from anywhere in the world where you have Internet access. You can do this on the website of the insurance company you have chosen.
The new policy will begin the day after the previous insurance contract expires.

What documents are needed?
If the policyholder comes to his insurance organization with a previous MTPL policy, then, in principle, he may not provide any information about himself (unless, of course, there have been changes, for example, a change of name or rights), the consultant will find information about the owner of the policy in his database and will issue you a new insurance contract.
But, if you are applying for a contract renewal not in your insurance company or you do not have a previous insurance contract in hand, then you will have to provide the insurance company employee with the following information:
- Personal information about the policyholder and car owner (and the policyholder and the owner of the car can be different persons) such as:
- details of the passport or a document replacing it;
- driver's license details;
- your SNILS number (according to Article 15 No. 40-FZ, this document was excluded from the list of requirements for drawing up a civil liability contract, but some insurance agents continue to require it from their clients);
- information about the place of registration of the car insurer.
- Car information:
- information contained in the PTS or STS;
- car diagnostic inspection card (if your vehicle is less than three years old, then you have the right not to provide this document). The insurer can also check the completion of a diagnostic examination using the unified EAISTO database;
- auto liability policy that requires renewal (if available).
If you are taking out a limited auto liability policy, then in order to provide drivers with legal access to driving a car, you must include them in the auto liability policy; to do this, you need to provide the insurance company employee with the following information :
- passport details of the drivers you trust to drive your car;
- information from driver's licenses.
Registration procedure
When considering the question of whether it is allowed to renew the policy in advance, it is worth emphasizing that this should be done at least a few days before the final validity period of the current OSAGO . To avoid unpleasant incidents, you should arrange such protection for your car in advance and choose from 2 purchasing options:
- If in 1-2 weeks, then the probability of refusal is minimal, because most insurance companies will issue a policy when it is necessary for it to start working 10-12 days earlier.
- When the period should be longer, then you will have to submit a written application (submit it in person, receive a return receipt, or send it by registered mail in order to have evidence).
Moreover, in the second case, it is worth officially applying no later than 2 months (60 days) before the current contract ends, if the driver does not want a significant time gap when he will have to drive without compulsory motor insurance due to a discrepancy in terms. For convenient registration, each client is provided with the best conditions. You can update your MTPL in another city or even region: in any locality where there is a branch of the selected insurer.
What documents are needed?
When proceeding directly to the procedure for re-registration (extension) of compulsory motor liability insurance, at the initial stage the driver will have to collect a standard set of documents. The list of required papers is in many ways similar to the set that is requested when concluding a new contract , therefore it includes in the list:
- passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
- PTS and inspection certificate;
- vehicle registration certificate;
- old MTPL policy (original and copy);
- application for contract extension;
- valid driver's license.
If several persons were included in the previous insurance at the same time, then at the same time it is worth presenting their passports and licenses - this applies to all persons who, in theory, will drive a specific car (except for special agreements that are drawn up for an unlimited number of drivers). And when a trusted person is involved in the registration, a notarized power of attorney is certainly added to the above certificates.
Where to contact?
When planning to draw up an MTPL agreement in advance, it is worth noting that such actions can only be implemented 30 days before the end of the previous policy. Therefore, in practice, you can renew an expired policy ahead of schedule using only 2 methods:
- At the auto insurer’s office (you need to personally visit a branch of your insurance company, collect and take a typical package of documents, show your old expired policy, wait for the due amount to be recalculated taking into account accident-free driving rates and a number of other factors - they may differ depending on the organization and region of residence).
- Via the Internet (motorists have the right to draw up a new contract online, if the selected insurer has its own portal with the necessary functionality - at least contacts for communication via email - similar actions should be taken, but all documents should be uploaded using a special form and the form should be filled out).
Despite the chosen option, the total period is still exactly 30 days, during which a Russian motorist can legally conclude a new insurance contract while the old one has not yet come to an end.
Is it possible to extend OSAGO in advance?
In accordance with the law, the insurance company extends the compulsory motor third party liability insurance contract one month before its expiration upon request. This is regulated by the provisions of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation on public contracts (Articles 426, 445 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation).
Before the amendments to the legislation, the car owner had a month to enter into a new agreement after the old one expired. But after the amendments, this option is no longer available. Therefore, it is advisable to take care of obtaining new insurance in advance.
Based on the law, if the contract expires on August 31, you can file an appeal as early as the 1st of the same month. This is especially convenient if you are planning a trip - after returning, you can immediately get behind the wheel. In addition, contacting the insurer ahead of schedule eliminates the risk of refusal to renew due to the lack of forms. You just need to come on the day specified by the policyholder and get a new policy. In this case, you don’t have to worry about not meeting deadlines.
However, in practice, insurers are extremely reluctant to agree to a preliminary renewal. Most often the following options are possible:
- when renewing with the same insurance company, this can be done 2 weeks before the end of the old period;
- when contacting another insurer, a new contract will be concluded with you no earlier than a few days before the old one is cancelled.
And only in rare cases do insurance companies issue a new document 30 days before the expiration of the previous one. At the same time, it states that liability will arise only after a second inspection of the car. This means that you will have to undergo a technical inspection twice: once when you sign the agreement, after which it will take effect, and a second time when you apply for an extension before the expiration of the current one.
In addition to the question of whether it is possible to issue an MTPL insurance policy in advance and how long before this can be done, it is important to take into account the possibility of a discount on KBM. To receive it, you must have a year of accident-free driving. Here you need to pay attention that exactly 12 months must pass from the date of the last execution of the contract. Therefore, when applying for new insurance before its expiration date, you need to be prepared for the fact that there will be no recalculation of the CBM, since the required period of time has not yet passed. This means that you will have to buy insurance at the current price, without taking into account the discount for accident-free driving. But if you plan to increase insurance rates, this option may be more economical.
Registration cost
The procedure for extending civil liability insurance itself takes a fairly short period (no more than 30-40 minutes). The company representative is obliged to check the provided package of documentation, personally carry out the current calculation of the insurance premium and print out a new form. Only after this the driver should pay for the company’s services at the cash desk and sign the agreement.
Moreover, the cost of the next protection for a car and the tariff of the previous policy may not always be the same. Since organizations apply changed rates every year, the main coefficients are automatically adjusted.
So, when drawing up a new contract, the company’s managers will calculate the bonus again, from scratch: the final figure may change either up or down compared to the previous value. And when moving to another company, KBM for the previous year is rarely taken into account and the owner of the car will have to pay the full price without discounts and bonuses.
Deadlines for early registration of compulsory motor liability insurance
The MTPL policy has different validity periods:
- standard - 12 months;
- temporary: transit (after purchasing a car) or for foreign cars temporarily imported into the country.
A permanent MTPL policy is issued taking into account the BMC (bonus-malus coefficient) and has the lowest cost. The legislator makes it possible to renew insurance in advance, so that if the driver encounters unforeseen circumstances before its expiration, there is no interruption in coverage.
You can extend your MTPL no earlier than 60 days (two months) before its expiration. This rule applies to all civil contracts in Russia, including insurance transactions.
An insurance policy renewed in advance will take effect automatically upon expiration of the old insurance.
If the motorist knows for sure that he will be absent on the day when the document ceases to be valid, then the legislation provides for obtaining a new policy in advance. This raises the question for many people: how long in advance can you get insurance?
According to the rules, early receipt of a new OSAGO policy is possible 30 days before the expiration of the old document. But many companies independently increase this period to two months, so current and accurate information should be obtained directly from the insurer’s office.
Many car owners, due to their busy work schedules, completely forget that the “car license” should be extended, otherwise drivers will face a fine for the lack of a protection agreement when stopped by traffic police officers. But such punishment can be avoided if everything is done in advance, i.e. when applying before the expiration date of the current policy.
In 2021, the law states that car owners driving on public roads must protect their civil liability by purchasing an insurance policy. Therefore, it is necessary to issue compulsory motor liability insurance before the expiration date of the previous policy so that the protection is in effect continuously.
These subtleties are necessary to avoid unpleasant consequences, such as lack of assistance from the insurer in the event of an accident. Mandatory receipt deadlines are needed to prevent driver insecurity during this period.
You can apply for compulsory motor liability insurance in advance for a period equal to one calendar year. Do not confuse the term and period of use of the insurance, since the second is indicated separately if the car will be used for a limited number of months.
In general, regardless of whether you decide to buy an MTPL policy in advance or draw up a new contract after the old one has expired, the insurance period, i.e. The protection agreement between the two parties is valid for a year only.
The date of receipt of the compulsory motor liability insurance is considered the starting point, and the day before the end of the annual period, you can extend or completely abandon the “motor citizen”. If you do not extend the compulsory motor liability insurance in advance, the protection agreement will be considered invalid as soon as the new insurance period begins.
The constant workload of routine everyday life often becomes the reason that the driver forgets to contact the insurance company before the start of the new insurance period. As a result, he drives with the old policy form until he is stopped by traffic police officers or he gets into a traffic accident.
You need to remember that the insurance company renews the protection agreement every year only upon request, i.e. only after contacting and submitting an application for policy renewal. Knowing this, the question arises: is it possible to issue compulsory motor liability insurance in advance or agree on its extension? In this question the answer will be positive, i.e. You can make a new policy before the end of the compulsory motor liability insurance policy, and such a procedure must be undertaken.
According to the articles of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, the policyholder has the right to contact the company for an extension of the agreement 60 days before it expires. At the same time, the first 30 days are designed to resolve disputes and agree on conditions, but the remaining month before the expiration date is intended specifically for prolonging the “automobile license”. In other words, answering the question how many days in advance can a compulsory motor liability insurance policy be renewed, we will answer that one month before the expiration of the current one.
Since the “motor citizen” itself is valid for exactly one year, the preliminary purchase of a new protection agreement will not affect this period. That is, you can sign up for compulsory motor liability insurance 2 months earlier, but the new agreement will come into force only the next day after the old one expires and not the day before.
To buy an auto insurance policy, we contact the insurer. This can be done in person in the office or remotely.
By choosing a modern method, i.e. remote renewal, you can make an online calculation of the insurance premium that must be paid in order to receive the contract. Of course, you can buy compulsory motor insurance directly at the office of the insurance company, but this will take more time. As a rule, the period for drawing up a new agreement takes from 20-40 minutes.
After filling out the application and making a calculation, you will find out the cost of extending the MTPL for a new insurance period. After paying the premium, you will receive the form on the same day. The registration and renewal procedure itself is free, you only pay for the form, the price of which is calculated taking into account all correction factors and the KBM for the previous year.
In accordance with paragraph 1 of Article 10 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation “On Compulsory Motor Liability Insurance”, the compulsory insurance agreement is valid for a year. This is the maximum period for which such insurance is purchased. You can read about the minimum period for which compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance can be issued for a car here. And in this article we have revealed all the nuances of obtaining a policy for 3 months.
At the end of the reporting period, the MTPL policy must be renewed. It is also extended for 12 months. If the insurance period has expired and the contract has been extended, the car owner will have to pay a fine. Read about how to find out whether your MTPL insurance policy is valid here.
We invite you to read: Fine for driving without MTPL insurance in 2020
In addition, driving without insurance risks not only paying a fine. So, if the car owner is the culprit of the accident, he will have to compensate for all the damage caused entirely from his own pocket. You can read about exceptional cases when you are allowed to travel with a policy after the expiration date here.
IMPORTANT. Additionally, it should be noted that if the MTPL insurance is delayed, the car owner will have to enter into a new contract.
You can find out more about the policy period and the terms of MTPL insurance for vehicles here. And in this article we talked about what the validity period of a technical inspection for compulsory motor liability insurance is, when you need to pass it, and whether they will give you insurance without a coupon.
Sometimes situations arise when, due to current circumstances, the car owner does not have time to renew the insurance exactly when it expires. In this case, many drivers have a question about how many days before the expiration of the MTPL contract they can issue an extension. Read more about when you need to renew your policy here.
Thus, according to the current legislation in the field of compulsory insurance, an insurance policy can be renewed no earlier than 30 days before its expiration. For example, if your insurance ends on June 30, then you can renew it on any day starting from June 1. Otherwise, the insurance contract will be considered interrupted, which will entail the need to conclude it again. For more information about how many days before the expiration of a compulsory motor liability insurance policy you can issue a new one, read this material.
Thus, in order to avoid the risk of being fined or getting into an accident without insurance, it is recommended to take care of its renewal in advance. You can read about what an insured event is and how long compensation is paid to the party injured in an accident here.
When taking out insurance for a short period, you need to take into account not only the fact that it will soon have to be renewed, but also its cost. The fact is that companies are interested in selling annual policies, and therefore, when taking out an “incomplete” policy, drivers are faced with increased prices.
For example, for a six-month compulsory motor insurance policy, motorists pay 70% of the cost of a full-fledged policy instead of the logical 50%, and for three months - half of the annual one. Purchasing a policy for 10-11 months is not at all profitable: the cost will simply be equal to 12 months.
The insurance policy can be extended at any time. In this case, the overpayment for a short-term policy will disappear: the car owner will simply pay the amount missing to the amount of full insurance, and its term will increase to the standard one year.

If the extension is not enough for the car owner, then he will have to take out a new policy. You can take out insurance ahead of schedule - this is done earlier than one month before the expiration of the old one. For example, if the end date of the policy is March 31, then you can start applying for a new one as early as March 1.
Is it possible to renew insurance in advance without the owner?
It is fundamentally important for motorists to remember that without a power of attorney, even persons legally included in the insurance policy will not be able to obtain a renewal.
The registration process, even for several drivers, only provides the right to drive a vehicle, but only the full owner has the authority to perform any manipulations directly with the insurance.
On the other hand, no matter what time and how many days before the expiration of the MTPL policy, only some citizens will be able to issue a new copy:
- the insured (usually the owner of the car, although in some situations the contract is signed by other persons - friends, relatives, colleagues - since the law of the Russian Federation allows insuring other people's cars, but both persons must be indicated in the policy);
- owner (being the policyholder, it is the owner of the vehicle who has the right to draw up an insurance agreement 30 days before the completion of the previous one);
- third parties (on behalf of the owner of the car, third parties can renew OSAGO online or at the insurer’s office, if the driver accidentally expired the old version of the agreement - then the renewal algorithm is carried out by general power of attorney).
To generalize, only a person who has previously been involved in documenting the protection of a specific car can make a new extension of compulsory insurance and repurchase a policy if the old one is expired or will soon expire. Renewal without the current owner of the vehicle is possible only with a previously issued power of attorney certified by a notary.
Is it possible to extend
Sometimes situations occur that the car owner is not able to renew the car title due to the lack of a form or the office not working. In this case, the driver can receive a certificate from the insurer stating that an application for a desire to renew OSAGO insurance has been received and it will be implemented in the near future. This certificate will help you if the policy has expired and you are stopped by traffic police officers to check your documents.
In other cases, it is possible to extend compulsory motor liability insurance in advance without any delays, because insurers are obliged to fulfill their obligations upon the fact that the policyholder applies for an extension on the same day.
Without owner
Cases when a vehicle is not owned by the owner, that is, a person not indicated on the registration certificate, are quite frequent. This happens when the car is leased or the driver works for a company and is a driver.
In all these cases, a car insurance policy is purchased for the person who will be driving. Consequently, if the owner does not have the opportunity to extend the compulsory motor liability insurance, then he can entrust this procedure to another person.
Some insurance companies may require a notarized power of attorney to represent the interests of the policyholder. In addition to the power of attorney, the attorney will need to provide the same package of documents as the owner.
In another company
If you use the services of one insurance company and for some reason want to terminate the contract with it, then you must notify the insurer of this desire in advance. Termination of an agreement with one insurer will not affect the possibility of prolonging compulsory motor liability insurance in another class=”aligncenter” width=”670″ height=”340″[/img]
But it is impossible to extend the protection agreement only with another company remotely, since the other insurer does not have information about you. Therefore, if you decide to change the protecting company, do not forget that compulsory motor liability insurance is extended in advance, without waiting for its term to expire.
When does the new policy come into effect?
It is important to understand that when a car owner completes another transaction, but the previous copy is not yet expired, the contract will begin to be in full force only the next day after the completion of the earlier version. Therefore, you won’t be able to use it for compensation - not only will you not be given compensation, but they may also revoke the agreement and, in return, be charged with fraud. Therefore, a fresh contract should be used only after the old MTPL policy has been canceled within the specified time frame.
Is it possible to replace rights before the expiration date of the existing ones - when to change
Clause 6 of Article 25 of Federal Law No. 196-FZ states that the validity of a domestic driver’s license is 10 years, and an international driver’s license is 3 years. After the specified time, the document must be reissued.
A driver using an expired driver's license violates traffic rules and risks paying a large fine and also losing his vehicle for a while, so it is worth preparing for the procedure in advance. If a number of circumstances occur, a citizen has the opportunity to replace his rights before the expiration date of the current document.
In addition to situations regulated by law, conditions may come into force under which the service is provided at the discretion of traffic police officers.
In what cases is it possible to replace a driver’s license ahead of schedule?
A citizen who has received a driver's license must monitor the approaching expiration of its validity. This is easy to do - the date of issue of the document and the expiration of the period of its legitimacy are stamped on the front side of the plastic card.
Early replacement of a driver's license is provided for:
- changing the citizen’s personal data, for example, place of permanent registration, name. The latter is especially true for women who have gotten married and changed their last name. It is important to understand that in such a situation you cannot use the old license, accompanying it with a copy of the marriage certificate;
- loss of a document - its loss or theft;
- the ID is damaged to such an extent that reading the data becomes impossible;
- the need to add a new category to the VU;
- changes in the driver’s health status, assignment or removal of a disability group;
- detection by law enforcement agencies of the fact that a citizen used fake certificates or false data to obtain rights;
- change of citizenship.
For driving with an expired driver's license, the driver risks paying a fine or being removed from driving the vehicle.
Starting from 2021, the presence of outstanding fines on a driver is not a reason for refusing to issue a driving license in a timely or early manner.
How long before the expiration date is a replacement possible?
According to the law, you can apply for a replacement document when there are less than 6 months left before the expiration date of the document. It is important to take into account that to carry out the procedure you will have to prepare a number of documents, pay a state fee and undergo a medical commission. For this reason, you should not postpone the event until the last minute, otherwise you may be left without the right to drive for a while.
Documents for early replacement of a certificate
If it becomes necessary to obtain new rights long before the expiration of the existing ones, it is better to visit the traffic police department and ask the employee all the questions.
Even if the conditions listed in the official list of reasons for early change of rights are not met, the inspector can meet them halfway.
To change your license ahead of schedule, you must provide a package of documents:
- All-Russian passport, copies of its pages with marks;
- driver's license, if you have one, regardless of condition and ability to read the data on it;
- medical certificate - the document is not required if the replacement of the license is carried out due to a change in the driver’s personal data, loss of the document, its damage, or the addition of a category. In other situations, you need to undergo a medical examination and provide the traffic police with a document confirming that you are not prohibited from driving a vehicle for health reasons. It is important to remember that the certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of issue;
- receipt for payment of state duty in the amount of 2 thousand rubles. Payment can be made in many ways, including using online banking. It is important to ensure that the payment confirmation is in the applicant’s hands in paper form.
You must apply for a replacement ID six months before the expiration date.
If less than six months remain before the expiration of the license or one of the conditions for early replacement of the document is met, the traffic police inspector is obliged to provide the service. In case of refusal, you should require written confirmation from the employee of his decision and contact the head of the department with a complaint.
Where can I change it?
There are several methods for replacing the VU, each of which has its own advantages. They are relevant regardless of whether the citizen wants to change the document ahead of schedule or at the time established by law.
Replacing a driver's license before its expiration date is carried out in one of the following ways:
- contacting the registration and examination department of the State Traffic Inspectorate is the best way for those who are in a hurry, know what documents to submit and have already collected them. It takes about an hour to produce a new license, therefore, if you take into account the department’s work schedule, you can receive a license on the day of application;
- Submitting an application to the MFC is convenient because you can apply to any center, regardless of your place of permanent registration. The only disadvantage of the approach is that it will take about 10 days to exchange data between services and prepare rights;
- filling out a request online is a convenient way to get acquainted with the list of required documents, submit them in the required form, and pay the state fee at a discount. The system will notify you about the deadline for the license to be ready and will allow you to select a traffic police department where you can obtain them after registration.
Replacement of the VU through the MFC is carried out within 10 working days.
If for some reason the driver cannot submit documents or obtain a driving license on his own, his official representative can do this. You must act under a power of attorney drawn up by a notary.
What will be the term specified in the new rights?
When planning to change your rights in advance, it is important to understand what the expiration date of the document will be on it after re-issuance. If a medical certificate is provided to obtain a driver’s license, then its period of legitimacy will be reset and a new 10-year countdown will begin.
Otherwise, the rights will be issued with the same expiration date as the previous ones. This usually happens when a driver changes a lost or damaged driver’s license or makes changes to it.
A driver's license can be replaced before its expiration date, if no more than six months are left until this date. The citizen is also obliged to do this if the document has been lost or damaged, as well as in the event of a change in personal data or indicators of the driver’s health. Did the article help? Are there any discounts on renewal?
As practice shows, when renewing a contract with the same insurance company, a driver who is a regular customer of this particular company has the right to count on special conditions and benefits if he has proven himself to be a conscientious consumer. For example, a significant reduction in the total cost of regular insurance occurs when no accidents were recorded in the driver’s statistics during the previous period.
Many insurance organizations value their clients, so they periodically offer them pleasant bonuses. But if the policy expires, there is a risk that all benefits will be withdrawn altogether - you need to try to maintain your reputation during the period of validity of the compulsory motor liability insurance policy and be less likely to get into accidents.
If the insurance is expired
By default, checking the documents of all road users is considered one of the reliable methods of control by traffic police officers. The fact of having a car insurance policy, as well as a license with a registration certificate, is a mandatory requirement for all car owners.
Violation of this rule is subject to a fine, the amount of which is determined depending on the severity and type of offense committed.
Typically, insurance company employees 1-2 weeks before the expiration of the compulsory motor liability insurance policy warn the client about the need to renew the policy and offer several options to choose from. But many drivers still ignore this requirement and risk being penalized for:

- Presentation of an insurance policy that has expired.
- Complete absence of compulsory insurance during inspection.
- Presentation of compulsory motor liability insurance issued for another car.

Sometimes, when renewing the MTPL policy for the next year, the driver may encounter some problems and nuances. So, let's look at some of them:
- Due to the rapid growth in popularity of using the Internet to renew insurance, many car owners often encounter difficulties in the operation of the service.
There are often cases when the website of an insurance organization freezes, takes a long time to load, or does not respond to requests at all for a certain period of time. Thus, it is recommended to renew the policy in advance, and not on the last day of coverage. How many days before the end of the compulsory motor liability insurance it is necessary to make an extension and what is needed for this, read here. - Significant increase in the cost of the policy.
In order not to encounter an unpleasant “surprise”, before renewing the policy, you should calculate its approximate cost, since each time it differs from the cost of the previous insurance. Moreover, it is necessary to take into account the presence or absence of participation in an accident over the past year. Sometimes, the cost of compulsory motor third party insurance (MTPL) insurance may differ between different insurers. This is due to the fact that some include the price for any additional services. - Sometimes there are cases when, when sending your data for verification to RSA, you receive a notification that the information has not been verified or has not received confirmation from RSA. In most cases, the reason for this is a mistake made by an employee of the insurance company when issuing a previous policy.
In this situation, it is recommended to contact the technical support of the corresponding website of the insurance company where the previous policy was purchased. Thus, the procedure for renewing an MTPL policy via the Internet is distinguished by its convenience and simplicity of the algorithm of actions. The most important thing is to renew your insurance in a timely manner.
The cost of insurance varies among different insurance companies. This is due to the fact that the legislator sets the size of the coefficients, and each company, within this framework, chooses for itself the indicator that is beneficial to it. This process increases competition in the car insurance market.

The user can independently calculate the preliminary cost of an MTPL policy from various companies in order to choose the most suitable option for him. There are online calculators on the UK websites on the Internet. All you need to do is enter the required data about the car, owner, drivers, type of insurance, and the calculation will be done automatically.
An important factor in determining the cost of the policy is the circle of people who have the right to drive. If their number is limited, then the CBM of the one with the largest is taken into account. If anyone can drive, the cost of the document will be much higher.
For a healthy person (not a disabled person), the size of the bonus-malus coefficient is the only way to reduce the cost of insurance. If in the past period (over the last 12 months) there were no accidents that occurred due to the fault of drivers allowed to drive this vehicle, then the car insurance premium is reduced, and therefore the insurance price is reduced. Over 10 years of accident-free driving, the price of the document is halved, which significantly saves the owner’s money.
Changing the insurance company does not affect the size of the CBM. All facts are entered into a single state database; you can check them on the RSA (Russian Union of Auto Insurers) website.
The insurance company may refuse to renew the policy in the following cases:
- payment for insurance has not been made;
- the necessary documents have not been provided;
- the information entered by the user into the e-policy does not correspond to the truth (incorrect, outdated or with typos).
Sometimes there may be technical problems on the websites of insurers; in this case, you can contact the technical support of the insurance company website and find out what the reason is.
